The Soul Still Burns as Namco Finally Announces Soulcalibur®II At its Tokyo Press Conference[edit]
After 4 years of silence, the premier 3-D weapons-based fighter is announced for a simultaneous release on all three video game consoles
Tokyo, Japan and San Jose, Calif., January 15, 2003 - Namco Ltd. proudly announced today the release of their long awaited sequel to one of the most revered weapons-based fighters of all time. Soulcalibur II is scheduled to release in Japan on March 27th and in North America in August 2003 on all three video game platforms. Soulcalibur II will be available on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Nintendo GameCube™, and the Xbox™ video game system from Microsoft. With over 3 million units sold worldwide, the "Soul" franchise, which includes Soulblade (1996) and Soulcalibur (1999), has received worldwide recognition and critical acclaim raising the bar for 3-D weapons-based action fighters. Soulcalibur II will include a variety of different game modes and feature exclusive "special guest" characters for each platform version. Soulcalibur II features seven distinctive modes of game-play including: Arcade, Vs, Time Attack, Survival, Team Battle, Practice, and the console exclusive, Weapon Master. Weapon Master is a "complete the mission" mode combined with an RPG twist. In this mode, the player can collect and equip their character with up to 200 different weapons, thus adding a deeper level of strategy to every new battle. In addition to other new characters, each platform will also feature a special appearance by a well-known pop culture icon. Characters will be fully playable with their own individual styles, strengths, and abilities. The Nintendo GameCube version will feature a sword-wielding Link from Nintendo's best-selling Legend of Zelda series. The PlayStation 2 version will feature a bare-fisted Heihachi from Namco's ever-popular Tekken series. And finally, armed with a battle-axe, the Xbox version will feature Spawn, Todd McFarlane's best-selling comic book character whose renderings set new artistic standards in the comics industry. All three versions will also introduce Necrid, a brand new character to the series created specifically for Soulcalibur II by Todd McFarlane Productions, Inc. About Namco Hometek Inc.
