 (((  EDITORS COMMENTS  )))  - http://www.PrimaGames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We bring big news this week, as both Dino Crisis and Virtua
Tennis are confirmed to get a Dreamcast translation. We've
also got news on Toejam & Earl 3 Internet Play, and in the
features there's 2 Sega Puzzles for you to solve! Then if
you have Chu Chu Rocket, a feature this week details how
to send and receive VMU files over the net just before the
Q&A page.
Plus being our 75th issue of Dreamcast Weekly, we had to
do something special. Thanks to Prima Games we have 5
Crazy Taxi books (worth about US$65 in total) to give away.
Now how to give them away? Ok simply send me an e-mail
with the subject "Crazy Taxi Guide Contest", and these
2 questions answered correctly to be in the draw...
1) What is the name of the arcade board that powered
   Crazy Taxi?
2) Since they did give us the books, why don't we make
   the second question about Prima Games (no they didn't
   suggest we did). Their website is at http://www.primagames.com/
   but what's their slogan? (hint: it's part of their
   main logo and is Trademarked)
Simply click reply and change the subject to "Crazy Taxi
Guide Contest" to enter after reading this weeks Issue.
The winners will be drawn next Sunday, and e-mailed to
ask for further details. This contest is open to anyone
anywhere in the world, but as always multiple entries will
be deleted.
Finally this week since I've decided to do more research
before the feature on games that deserve but have never
received sequels, we have a review of the latest soccer
game, Virtua Striker 2 Ver 2000.1 as this weeks cover.
Until next time, Happy Gaming everyone!
>>>> Virtua Striker 2 Ver 2000.1 Review
>>>> Written by Tails
Sega's arcade soccer title has finally reached the shores
of America. But US gamers have already been treated to
the best Sega Sports has to offer, with NFL 2K, NBA 2K
and NHL 2K, so does Virtua Striker 2 Ver 2000.1 have
what it takes to make it into the list too?
Well in a word, no. But here's the catch, while that's
a common question I hear when people want to know how
VS plays, it doesn't actually try to compete with those
former mentioned sport sims. This is an arcade game,
evolved through many different versions since the
Virtua Striker series began in 1996. So if your expecting
to delve into detailed options and stats before you
begin a match, your in for a surprise when the game
starts without 10 or so minutes of pre-game screens.
Neither should you expect in game commentary, which to
be realistic wouldn't be heard in the arcades anyway.
Although that's no excuse for poor sound effects,
which are a big part of any Soccer title. The virtual
crowd is a little too virtual for me, having a limited
range of emotions. The only thing the crowd really
reacts too is when a goal is scored, which is a sad
attempt at sound to say the least.
Speaking of scoring goals however, being an arcade
game you'd expect at least a few in each game. This is
a common problem is soccer titles, as goal keepers are
usually either too easy or too hard. I'm glad to report
while even those who have only played 1 or 2 soccer
titles in their gaming lifetime can score, the
challenge is still there for more experienced players.
Lastability comes into question with any arcade port,
and VS fares well here again. The first mode is "Arcade",
and as the manual states is a recreation of the Arcade
version. Next up include International Cup, Variations
and Match Play modes. To begin with in Variations mode
you can play in a Tournament with up to 16 players, a
League with up to 32 players, or Ranking Mode where your
performance in a series of games is ranked. Getting
through all those takes quite some time, and the ranking
mode is useful for training to win that big game. Match
Play contains the usual VS Mode for 2 player battles,
against either a CPU or human opponent. PK Match is the
other option, which works well as a mini-game. Since
Penalty Kicks do take a little practice to get just
right too, many a worthwhile training session can be had
here.
After selecting your mode, it's into the game options
and team selection screens. The options reveal nothing
new, letting you select the usual half time, offsides,
cards and more. Teams range from different corners of
the world, including Africa, Europe, Asia and America.
Every player is well detailed, replicating those
impressive Model 3 graphics perfectly. The animation
is good, including a variety in goal celebrations
(although I have to admit often I do bigger dances
in my living room after scoring a goal than the on
screen players). So the animation could use a little
work, although it isn't a sore point in the game or
anything.
Another point where the game could use a little
work is on the control. For the true arcade experience
you'll need to plug in the Arcade Stick, which actually
works great with VS. But those playing with the normal
Dreamcast controller may find it frustrating you can
only use the D-Pad and not the Analog thumb pad. The good
news is you do get used to it, but wether you should
have to or not remains a debate-able point.
When it comes to swapping players during the game,
VS is both good and bad. Even when it says your in
control of a player, the CPU will remain in control
until you have time to adjust. Which makes running in
the wrong direction by accident next to impossible.
Where the good turns to bad however is when you see
a player in position to get the ball, and the CPU
makes him run away. Most annoying! Fortunately this
doesn't happen all too often, but when it does you can't
help but feel that frustration rising and enjoyment
dropping. Which is a real shame on a game that relies
heavily on just the fun factor.
So the game has it's good and bad points. Virtual Time
is a nice touch, where the time of day in the game
is based on the Dreamcast's clock. But perhaps Sega
should have spent that time ironing out the control
problems instead. Until the next version in the Virtua
Striker series (where Sega are planning a major overhaul
for the game rather than a simple update - great to
hear) this will keep soccer fans happy, but it could
have been better.
>>>> Dino Crisis DC Confirmed
This week I received the latest release schedule from
Ozisoft New Zealand, and yes Dino Crisis was down for
a Dreamcast release this May, to be published by Virgin
Interactive in Europe.
After checking up it's not a typo or something (wouldn't
that be a tease!), what's most lightly to be a port of
the newly announced PC version of Dino Crisis was
confirmed for the Dreamcast.
We'll keep you updated on any Dreamcast enhancements and
news of a US release in future issues.
>>>> Virtua Tennis Comes Home
One of Sega's latest arcade titles, Virtua Tennis (which
I had the fun of playing this weekend) is indeed coming
to Dreamcast. The game's twin cabinet uses the Naomi
board, which will make for a perfect arcade port to our
favorite home console.
If you've seen the game yourself, you'll know the graphics
are certainly impressive, but the game will need some
serious additions to make a worthy home translation. The
game is due out in America this July.
>>>> Toejam & Earl 3 To Include Internet Play?
The chances of Toejam & Earl 3 including Internet play
has certainly increased this weekend, as Toejam & Earl
Productions is looking for a new staff member. Multi-
player, inter-networked game programming experience is
listed as a big plus, as shown below...
"We are looking for our third top notch 3D game programmer
to round out an already funktastic software team.  Please
be advised that there's absolutely no better place in the
galaxy to work.  Candidates must have at least 3 years
C/C++ programming experience, and have shipped at least
one title.  Console experience and multi-player,
inter-networked game programming experience would be a big
plus!  You need to have excellent communication skills,
love to laugh, and have a good tolerance for crunching as
milestones approach.
We offer competitive salaries, full benefits, and royalty
sharing. Please email cover letters and resumes to:
resumes@TJandE.com "
>>>> Phantasy Star Online WORLDWIDE Release
Yes it's a rare occurrence in the gaming industry, but a
simultaneous release around the globe is exactly what
Sega are aiming for with Phantasy Star Online.
The game is due out late this year, giving Sega plenty of
time to get the network prepared for the first game of
it's kind. 3 more players from anywhere in the world can
join in your adventure via the Internet.
You'll be able to call upon your friends using an automatic
detect function, and all dialogue in the game will be done
using graphical symbols and pre-defined phrases. Which
means it's possible to play gamers in Japan who have no
knowledge of the English language.
The gameplay will truly be a worldwide experience, and
hopefully the storyline and depth of the adventure will
continue on the tradition of excellence we associate with
both the Phantasy Star brand and developers Sonic Team.
>>>> Castlevania: Resurrection Put To Rest
Gamespot Germany has brought some fairly gloomy news about
the good old Count Dracula this week. His Dreamcast
adventure of Castlevania: Resurrection has been canned,
as Konami Of America moved the staff onto other projects.
No reason for the scrapping of this game has been given,
but after the impressive screens reveal last year, and
given the legacy of the popular Castlevania series, it is
indeed sad news.
 (((  RED HOT RUMORS  )))    - http://www.PrimaGames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Welcome to the rumors section of Dreamcast Weekly, each
week we'll keep you up to-date with the latest rumors going
around.

>>>> Crazy Taxi 2 On Playstation 2 ?!?

After Acclaim got the publishing rights to Virtual On: OT,
and CSK (Sega's largest share holder) handled Shenmue,
rumors of other companies publishing games for Sega were
bound to happen... but not quite like this. Someone seems
to have jumped the gun with the yearly April Fool news.

Segaweb have reported rumors that Acclaim has got the
rights to Ferrari F355 Challenge and Crazy Taxi 2. They
suggest that AM2 at Sega will develop Crazy Taxi 2, but
Acclaim will publish the title, on both Dreamcast and
Playstation 2 consoles.

Before I had little respect for this rumor, but now I
have even less. As always, the chances of a Sega game
on a Sony console is nill. To date Segaweb is the only
website that has posted these rumors, which is a good
sign... but as they said, this is one rumor we can't
ignore.

Here's hoping we don't hear anymore on it :)

A) They come with the Official Dreamcast Magazine yes,
   although you can probably get a replacement by calling
   your local Sega support number (Sega Argentina?) or
   perhaps even through the retailer you bought your
   Dreamcast from. The Dreamcast Magazine is the certain
   way to get one though.

>>>> Star Craft or War Craft?

Q) Will there be any games from 'Blizzard' like Star Craft
   or War Craft coming to the DC? - Charlie

A) Neither of those games will come to Dreamcast, although
   War Craft 3 is a possibility. So far Blizzard hasn't

>>>> Lik-Sang Update

O DC Double Power!

A new product just added this week has certainly caught
my attention. Called the "DC Double Power" unit, it costs
US$20, and lets you transfer data between 2 VMU's, and
create your own VMU pictures.

I can't get into their FAQ about the unit yet unfortunately,
but I'll try and get more details for a future issue.

www.Lik-Sang.com

Lik-Sang don't pay Dreamcast Weekly in exchange for writing
about them each week, after the great feedback we've had
for our readers about them, we just believe they are the
best importer on the web.

>>>> More News

With no new games to take videos of this week they turn
their focus to gaming news. Metropolis SR gets delayed,
EA comments again on the Dreamcast, Tomb Raider 4 goes
gold on Dreamcast, and more.

Why are they featured in Dreamcast Weekly? Because their
movies are quite possibly of the highest quality on the
net, that's why. If you haven't checked them out yet,
now's a good time to start.
