As we come to the end of May the line up for your summer is looking as
hot as ever. This weeks news features release dates for everything from
Space Channel 5 to Virtua Tennis, World Series Baseball 2K1, D2, Quake
3 Arena, Sega GT, and more.

Then there's the new names for Sega's 1st party developers, and believe
me they could have only come from Japan (we also let you know what hits
each team has produced in the past). Plus exciting rumors for the week
bring up an Enix strategy RPG that might be making it's way to the
Dreamcast.

We've got cheats for Maken X and Rainbow Six, Q & A on Sega GT, Streets
Of Rage, Metal Gear Solid 2, and as always the DVD player. Then finally
our cover feature reviews a few new products in the video gaming
industry, including a do-it-your-self guide to making a projector TV,
a unit to let you use the Saturn Twin Sticks on the Dreamcast, and
plenty more.

Until next week then Happy Gaming, and remember, The Game Is Never Over!

The Fansite Cometh note: This week we were going to feature letters from
readers on last weeks editorial from The-Nextlevel.com, however we only
received a few letters. Thanks to those who did write in, and as always,
every e-mail we receive is read.

Over the past few weeks however I've received things to review from the
very nice people at Lik-Sang, and also plans on how to make your own
projector TV from the UK!

>>>> Projector TV Plans

P.Thompson in the UK has developed plans to turn your ordinary TV into
a projector TV, allowing for game playing on your wall! Selling the
plans on his website at:

http://www.angelfire.com/ma/magickrequest/index.htm

It quotes you can "Project your TV up to 100' for less than £10!" and
after looking at the plans myself, I believe he has indeed created a
way for us that can't afford a $2000 projector TV to play games on a
huge scale.

The plans don't involve anything you couldn't get on one trip into town,
easy to read instructions and diagrams are provided to ensure we don't
have any problems. Overall it's a well thought out booklet with a CD
version coming in the summer. Those who buy the print version can later
send off for the CD version at no cost but a self addressed envelope.
Costing £10 or US$15.75, you can order online from the website linked
below, or in a months time www.projectorplans.co.uk

On the main page it does say "Don't delay, the price of these plans is
likely to double very soon!", although I have to question that, and if
it did double, question why. Aside from that however, the site also
includes many questions I would have asked myself, for example if I
have to open my TV up (the answer being no), and is generally very
helpful.

So do they get the DC Weekly approval? In a word, yes. They deliver
everything that's promised. Good work!

>>>> VMU Replacement Case

First off, I'm not the best person to take apart electronics. In fact
before the blue Dreamcast console case, I hadn't taken anything apart
in my entire life. But there my Dreamcast is, working fine, and
looking great. So when I saw the purple VMU case I couldn't wait to
replace my boring grey case and show it off.

But when it arrived and after putting it on came some good and bad
news. Firstly I couldn't get my VMU out of sleep mode, then when it
was running through the Dreamcast only the top half of the screen
worked. Removing the case again revealed I had broken one of the
very finely soldered wires inside. Oops!

The VMU is one very delicate unit, and I advise taking extreme care
when performing a little surgery on it, well at least more than I
did. I'm not trying to scare you off the replacement case here, it
does look great, but I'm just saying if you've never taken anything
apart, get someone who knows what they are doing to help you and you
shouldn't have any trouble.

Now I had some good news? Yes, as every owner of a VMU will know,
those plastic lids are a real pain. It's not long before the little
tabs on the sides wear down and your lid is falling off all the time.
I'm happy to report the lids on the VMU Replacement Cases are built
strong and solid.

Who would I recommend get this? Well at just under US$10, anyone who
wants to be different. For example when I had an import Dreamcast
before it was released in the rest of the world, everyone wanted to
have a look at my VMU. Now everyone can buy one, it's just not the
same. So I'd advise anyone likes to show off pick up one of these.

>>>> Total Control 2

Most people know of the EMS Memory Cards (the Nexus 4X or 16X cards),
and like me use them every day. But EMS also make the Total Control
units, allowing you to use controllers from other consoles, and even
the PC keyboard, with your Dreamcast.

In particular the Total Control 2 uses Playstation or Playstation 2
controllers and PC keyboards. While it's clear how useful the PC
keyboard would be, why would you want to play with a Sony controller?

After testing the unit, I've found the Dual Shock pad actually rumbles
better than Sega's jump pack. Some models of the Dual Shock controller
require a 9V power supply, but if you already have one like me (powering
the computer speakers) it's no trouble plugging it into the Total
Control unit.

Along with the basic controller, it also works with the Playstation
Light gun, and Steering Wheels. Great news if your expensive racing
wheel doesn't support the Dreamcast.

Who would I recommend buy this? Someone who already owns a Playstation,
or just needs a Dreamcast keyboard. The unit costs US$24, but that's
a small price to pay if you've already shelled out on a variety of
Playstation devices.

http://www.lik-sang.com

>>>> Total Control 3

This time it's Saturn controllers getting the Dreamcast treatment, and
it brings great news for fans of the Virtual On games. Including a
Twin Sticks mode, you can use the Saturn Twin Sticks to play Virtual
On 2 on your Dreamcast.

Another high point of the unit is the ability to plug a VMU into the
side, meaning the Dreamcast console reads it as if it's plugged in to
a normal Sega controller.

So who would I recommend buy this? At US$24 it's a little too
expensive just for the novelty of playing with a Saturn controller,
although if you have the money to spare, and your used to the Saturns
pad, the Total Control 3 is here for you. Finally if your a fan of
Virtual On, don't want to pay hundreds of dollars for the Dreamcast
Twin Sticks, find yourself some second hand Saturn Twin Sticks and
get this unit.

>>>> Sega Smile Pit - New Names For Nine New Companys

From the 1st of July 2000 Sega Of Japan will split their development
teams into several new companies. Sega will still remain the biggest
shareholder in each company, however they are independent of Sega in
hopes this will create better efficiency in each team, and overall help
Sega start making some profits.

The following is the new names for each AM team, however both AM2 and
Sonic Team are absent from the list as they have chosen to retain their
well respected names.

AM1 - WOW (House Of The Dead)
AM3 - Hit Maker (Crazy Taxi)
AM4 - Amusement Vision (Virtua Striker)
AM5 - Sega Roso (Star Wars Racing)
AM6 - Smile Pit (Jet Set Radio)
AM7 - Over Works (Eternal Arcadia)
AM9 - United Game Artists (Space Channel 5)

>>>> Naomi's Successor Revealed

Sega officially announced their next arcade hardware this week, which
will "deliver a new, unmatched level of gaming experience to arcades
worldwide" as Hideki Sato, the senior vice president at Sega said.
Sega also stated this new hardware is already being used in current
projects, and should be in arcades by the end of the year.

The next generation arcade systems are based on the PowerVR architecture
and also incorporate an advanced PowerVR co-processing engine for great
game dynamics and full hardware geometry transformation and lighting
(T&L), which reduces the CPU load to 1 / 10th, as well as direct and
efficient support for use of multiple PowerVR rendering processors for
super high performance and outstanding image quality. Says Hossein
Yassaie, CEO, Imagination Technologies: "Our new work will enable Sega
to create even more stunning and realistic arcade games by utilising
the advanced PowerVR hardware transformation and lighting engine,
together with multiple PowerVR rendering processors, while hugely
benefiting from the freed up resources in the main CPU for actual game
dynamics."

Hidetoshi Kosaka, General Manager of NEC said, "The relationship between
NEC and Sega has been very successful. Our PowerVR 2DC graphics processor
is already used in Sega's Dreamcast console and the Naomi arcade system.
We are pleased that this ongoing relationship has now entered its next
phase of achievement and innovation."

But what will this next phase mean for those perfect Naomi to Dreamcast
ports? No doubt the home versions won't look quite as nice as their
big brothers, but not being all too different from the current Naomi
board, high quality ports shouldn't be too much of a problem.

 (((  RED HOT RUMORS  )))                                     - Page 4 -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome to the rumors section of Dreamcast Weekly, each week we'll keep
you up to-date with the latest rumors going around.
>>>> Orge Battle
Apparently rumors are that Enix are developing a Dreamcast title, the
next in their series of Orge Battle games. The game was originally on
the SNES back in 1995, followed by a sequel, Tactics Orge, but more
recently both titles have been re-released on the Playstation.
The game is a strategy title often compared to Final Fantasy Tactics.
Highlights being the nonlinear gameplay, and 13 different endings based
on how you play through the game. Orge Battle is a title for serious
strategy gamers, as the battles themselves are beyond your control,
the outcome largely depends on your pre-fight selections and plans.
As there are currently no strategy RPG's on the Dreamcast, we'll be
watching this rumor carefully over the next few months.
>>>> Will Sega Bring Back.... ?
Q) I was wondering if Sega was going to make another Streets of Rage
   and maybe another SplatterHouse for the Dreamcast!? - Johnny
A) If they are, they are keeping it top secret at the moment. However
   for each old game they bring back, one new game must be sacrificed.
   I would love to see another Streets Of Rage just as much as the
   next person, but if I had to choose between that and say Spike Out
   or Outrigger, I'd really have to choose carefully. I imagine Sega
   will watch Ecco's success with great interest, and that may or may
   not open the doors to bringing back more games from the past.
>>>> DVD For Early Dreamcast Owners
Q) You mentioned in one of your earlier issues about the new Sega DVD
   drive, and that is now going to be a completely new console.  Will
   Sega provide a discount or trade in for us that were unable to wait
   and rushed out to buy the Dreamcast as soon as it was released.  I am
   hoping that Sega has some plan to make the DVD addition available to
   the loyal enthusiasts that have already bought the the greatest
   machine in gaming history.  Thanks for the time and hopefully you'll
   have some answer for my question so I will once again be able to sleep
   at nights.  Great articles guys. You have kept me up to date and
   extremely hopeful about the future of Sega and the Dreamcast! - Perry
A) Sega have revealed what was seen at the E3 was indeed a very early
   prototype, and in fact doesn't even confirm a DVD player is ever going
   to be released. As Peter Moore, president at Sega Of America said,
   "to put 50 shoes in the market, you have to design 200-300 different
   kinds." - dc.ign, so that's just one possible design shown at the E3.
   Details such as price and release date are certainly not going to be
   announced any time soon unfortunately.
>>>> Is Sega Falling Down Again?
Q) 1) Is Sega fallin' off again? I'm a Sega supporter, and I can't
      imagine how could I be disappointed if Sony will win again (no VS,
      but what a shame!!!). I thought Sega was doin' well, and new
      smashing titles are coming by this summer: why, tell me why??
   2) I've noticed that third parties aren't lot down with sega... I've
      already seen people gettin' crazy to the screenshots of Metal Gear
      Solid 2, and I'm getting angry! Why Scud race & Daytona 2 hasn't
      been announced yet? It could be that DC cannot be compared to model
      3? in my opinion DC hasn't enough power for perfect ports of model
      3 games: colors, memory, frame rate... it makes me think!
   3) Is Jet grind radio going to feature different soundtrack from the
      original game (jet set radio)? or will it have some features of the
      american hip hop culture? Thanks, hope you'll answer! - Raffaele
A) 1) Sega are doing well... just not in Japan. But then neither is Sony
      in Japan. The Playstation 2 console is selling like mad, but Sony
      is losing money on each unit, and the average person doesn't even
      buy 2 games. Space Channel 5 and Seaman are two brand new titles
      due out this summer.
   2) Yes the press is jaw dropped at Metal Gear Solid 2. But that's the
      very same reaction they had with Shenmue. Only MGS2 has a chance
      of coming to the Dreamcast, Shenmue isn't coming to the Playstation
      2. As for Scud Racer and Daytona USA 2, I honestly don't know.
      Hopefully we'll see something on them later this year. Ferrari 335
      is probably Sega's most impressive racer on the Dreamcast to date,
      and looks of around Model 3 quality. I think Sega can do Daytona,
      if they pick the right development team.
   3) The US version of Jet Set Radio will feature the same soundtrack
      yes. The US version will have an extra stage however.
>>>> Waiting On Sega GT Forever
Q) I was wondering when Sega GT is coming out in America. I have been
   waiting on it forever. Would you please tell me. Thanks - Jason
A) Sega GT is due out on the 29th of August at the moment.
www.dreamcastweekly.com :) The site includes the history of the
magazine, back issues, and more. Then in the future... who knows,
hopefully we'll be a print magazine one day (Hint hint to any publisher
that may be reading this :) )
