>>>> Dreamcall Review - Phone Via Dreamcast
-- Written by Michael Monahan
The Dreamcast's Internet capabilities have finally become
more advanced with the US release of Dreamcall! Using the
Dreamcast microphone Dreamcall lets you call people from
around the world using your Dreamcast, and the Internet.
While using Dreamcall you will start to think it is a real
phone, with virtually no lag and crisp and clear sound
quality it will revolutionize the way you use your DC!
Dreamcall comes with the new 2.6 browser sold with the
Official Dreamcast magazine in the US. To operate Dreamcall
you must have a microphone for your Dreamcast, included
with Seaman or sold separately from Sega for almost nothing
and you will of course need the Internet on your DC.
After loading your webrowser and signing onto the net, you
will see a cell phone shaped icon on the top right corner
of your screen. Click on that icon, and you will
automatically be taken to the Dreamcall screen. Before
using Dreamcall you also must sign up for it, the signing
up process takes less than 2 minutes. You have two
options, you can sign up for a service that you can only
call DC to DC, or you can sign up for a service that you
have to pay for with a credit card that will allow you to
call DC to phone. The charges are about a little less than
a regular long distance phone call from a regular phone.
When your done signing up you have to login, all you have
to do to login is to press the login button, you don't even
have to enter any information so don't worry about
forgetting a password or something like that. After that
you will be presented with a screen showing a phone shaped
picture with numbers and buttons on it. This is your
Dreamcall. To operate it you must first plug in the
person's phone number your calling or the Dreamcall ID your
calling. Next you have to press call DC to DC or DC to
phone depending on which you're calling a phone or a DC.
After you press the call button you will almost instantly
be connected with the other person depending on your
Internet connection speed.
Talking with the other person may seem a little strange at
first, but you will adjust. The sound quality is usually
very good, but sometimes you may get a little lag from the
Internet. Let me say this, my Internet phone on my computer
is no way near as good as Dreamcall. Also, when you are
receiving a call using Dreamcall you don't have to be on
the Dreamcall page. You can be surfing the net, and the
Dreamcall icon will lite up and ring, so that is another
good feature of it.
Dreamcall is great, and soon it will be used in many online
games, like solving puzzles, or even just racing against
other people. Look forward to Dreamcall, and the
possibilities it will bring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>>>> Daytona USA 2001 Racing Guide
-- Written by Tails
Despite the terrible dance remix of Blue Blue Skies that
sends shivers down our collective spines, Daytona USA 2001
is THE Daytona. Now we bring you a guide with details on
each secret car, plus power sliding and rocket start tips
for those new to the game.
-- Secret Car #1: Pywackett Barchetta
To race in this wacky three wheeled car (complete with an
equally wacky driver), just finish any course with each
original car. For example complete Circuit Pixie with the
Hornet, then the Grasshopper, next the Falcon, then finally
the Lightning.
Grip: |||||||| - 85
Accel: |||||||| - 80
Top Speed: |||| - 40
-- Secret Car #2: Pywackett Barchetta Super
To get this improved grip car, simply select the Pywackett
Barchetta and a track like 777 Speedway or Circuit Pixie,
reduce the laps to 2, and when the race begins, turn right
around and complete it in reverse. If you finish the race
(naturally you'll be in last place) you'll unlock this
next car.
Grip: |||||||||| - 100
Accel: |||||| - 60
Top Speed: |||| - 45
-- Secret Car #3: Unicorn
Your reward for making it through all four stages of the
Daytona championship is the third secret car, the Unicorn.
Your total points and difficulty level have no effect on
unlocking the car, you just have to come first in the final
championship stage, King Of Daytona.
Grip: ||| - 35
Accel: ||||||||| - 90
Top Speed: ||||||||| - 90
-- Secret Car #4: Rule of The 9th
In the single player mode you must set 1st place time
records on each track, with each variation (normal, mirror,
reverse, and mirror reverse). The laps must be set on their
fixation, but the difficulty level has no effect.
Grip: ||||| - 50
Accel: |||||||| - 85
Top Speed: |||||||| - 85
-- Secret Car #5: Red Cat
Online racing only - you must win one online race.
Grip: - ??
Accel: - ??
Top Speed: - ??
-- Secret Car #6: The Javelin
Most likely the final hidden car (aside from maybe the
horse?), this is pure speed packed with zero turning
ability. Ever wanted to race at over 400 kmp/h? :> To
unlock the car you must clock up over 100 hours of game
time.
Grip: || - 20
Accel: |||||||||| - 100
Top Speed: |||||||||| - 100
-- TIP #1: Become A Power Sliding Pro
The secret to this games fun and success is your ability to
power slide around corners, and without this technique,
it's just not Daytona.
One method which you've no doubt discovered yourself is to
turn sharply while braking, then accelerating and hoping
you make it out of the slide in one piece.
But the better method is to first select a manual car, then
when you reach a tough corner, drop the gears down twice,
and let off the accelerator. Then to straighten back up,
put the gears up again, and accelerate. Once you get the
hang of this, you'll have taken a huge step forward to
victory.
-- TIP #2: Rocket Start
This little trick has always been a big part of Daytona,
and allows you to start off a race at top speed. While the
countdown is running before your race, hold down your
brakes and keep the revs in the yellow bar. Then when you
hear the words, "GO!", release the brake when you hit
around 70 kmp/h and push the accelerator to the max.
-- TIP #3: Slip Streaming
If your in need of a little extra speed boost, and there's
no one behind to give you a "rear bumper", the best idea is
to drive directly behind another car. This is called
slip streaming, and in reality your car can go faster
because the vehicle ahead is pushing the air resistance to
either side for you. The same trick works in Daytona.
Thanks goes to Z0NE81, ex pmd, shnZero, Seph and Digi for
their contributions.
>>>> Metropolis SR Sequel
According to some sources, Bizarre Creations, the creators
of the amazing Metropolis Street Racer, are already working
on a sequel to their successful racing title. This sequel
is likely to contain online play and some new game modes.
(plus maybe the Alcatraz course they had to leave out of
the original - Tails)
>>>> King of Fighters 2000 & Last Blade 2
Agetec, the guys responsible for the release of King of
Fighters 99: Evolution over Western lands, are likely to
pick up SNK's latest Japanese Dreamcast releases. If
everything goes right, Last Blade 2 and King of Fighters
2000, will be spinning in a western Dreamcast sometime
this Spring.
<<<< Canadian Girls Kick Ass
I once dated this really nice girl and really liked her,
however she didn't care much for videogames. She did show
me that Canadian Girls Kick Ass! So of course the new girl
I'm looking at loves video games but won't date me. So
in the spirit of what was, here's to Blaise for writing in
about a free ISP.
Days left till MSR hits US: 7
Next week: METROPOLIS STREET RACER
*DCW Q&A of the Week Award*
>>>> Canadians and Free Stuff! FREE ISPs!
Hi, great online newsletter. Just though I'd let you know
www.3isfree.com is a Canadian free ISP, but I think it is
good for a lot of the USA, and maybe other parts of the
world. - Blaise Alleyne
>>>> L A G K I L L S
Q) Hi! I own a PAL Dreamcast (with a 33.6 kbps modem) and
I bought myself the US version of NFL2k1. But when I want
to play online, everything runs very slow. It takes like 5
minutes just to pick the teams! Do you know how I can get
a 56kbps Modem? Would it work with my Pal DC?
- Mike
I've got Quake3Arena for DC but when I play on internet it
doesn't work well. When I press the fire button it takes
up to one second to shoot! That's not cool! What could it
be? The distance from USA? The phone line, or the server?
- Diego MetalWarrioR, Argentina
A) The problem is the distance from the USA. Importing
games and getting them to run on a Dreamcast is one thing.
However, trying to play with SegaNet servers from anywhere
but the US is suicide. No matter how fast the modem, you
are still going to be lagging badly. Sadly, not all areas
have or will get servers to play on. This is just the way
it is for now. From what I've heard OZ won't be getting
any servers or internet abilities.
>>>> Jammin With da Man!
Q) I was wondering if you had any news of a DC version of
the arcade game Sega Sports Jam? I've seen it covered in
various arcade pages around the net and think it looks
great, right up my alley! Cheers, keep up the good work!
- Nik Tyrrell, UK
A) I read about this game in the new issue of ODCM. Like
all arcade games...the chances are always high unless
its a light gun game. I would say there is a very good
chance of this game hitting the Dreamcast...but then again
there are all of the Visual Concept sports games. I don't
expect any more game announcements from Sega until e3. So
well see then what's coming.
>>>> Nintenga...Segatendo?
Q) Rumors have it that Nintendo is looking to buy Sega.
We're curious about what have you heard. How would this
effect Dreamcast games and such. We are also curious to
whatever happened to your leaving (Tails)? Seem to remember
that sometime back you were looking for a replacement
because you were moving on. What ever happened? Thank you.
- Ron & Kathy Nemeth
A) Personally I can't see Nintendo buying out all of Sega.
I could see them buying up all of the software development
studios and turning them into Gamecube and GBA studios.
"About me leaving, that was from my website Sega 2000, and
unfortunately the new people in charge have had similar
problems that I have and want to move on. The site will
sadly close in the next few weeks. But I've never had any
plans to leave Dreamcast Weekly, that's for sure!" -Tails
>>>> Chowdown on SNK Showdown
Q) Hi, I finally got my Dreamcast, and I'm very happy. As a
great fan of games like King of fighters and others from
SNK, but I don't know if there's going to be a DC version
of Samurai Showdown. I would really like if there are plans
for one? Thank you for your help. - Carlos P
A) Cool, yet another Dreamcast fan. Good luck, there are
so many games to pick from. Especially if you were a former
Nintendo64 guy like me. Anyway, getting back to your
question... SNK pulled out from the US and dropped its
handheld system. Their games are going to be brought over
still, but by other companies. I haven't heard anything
about Samurai Showdown...but then again I haven't heard
anything about their new games. Maybe they'll announce
something at e3?
Keep the questions coming. - zondaro@usa.net
>>>> Top News Of 2000: Part #1
-- Written by Dan at http://www.PrimaGames.com/
As we look back at the first year of the twenty-first
century (or the last of the twentieth, depending on your
religion), Primagames.com would like to spend some time and
Internet real estate reminiscing about the stories and
events that shaped the world of computer and videogames. No
matter what kind of gamer you are, we think you'll have to
agree that this was a watershed year for the industry. As
we head into 2001, gaming will forever change as we know it
as new systems and genres debut and evolve. We think it's
important that, before we launch head-on into the future,
we take stock of the end of another generation of games.
-- These were the Top Stories of 2000:
The PlayStation 2 Launch Fiasco
-------------------------------
Five years ago, a lot of people were unsure just how a
major electronics company could compete in the videogame
market against the "big boys" of the time, Nintendo and
Sega. Sure, they had the cash to invest in developing the
PlayStation, but what would the games be like? Well, we
know what history wrote for Sony, thanks to strong first-
and third-party development, the relative ease of
programming, and the cost reductions of reproducing CDs
versus cartridges. All of those strengths, and many more,
put PlayStation on top of the home videogame heap, with
literally thousands of game titles to support it.
So, it seems like next-generation success was virtually
guaranteed for PlayStation 2. With continued development
support and the high-end hardware to make the new games
burn, not to mention that all-important backward
compatibility thing, all Sony had to do was get the PS2 on
store shelves in time for Christmas. Ah! There's the rub.
Funny thing about customer loyalty: It's hard to be loyal
to a product that isn't available. How long can you expect
PlayStation fans, and their parents, to hunt all over town
and on the Internet for a system that just isn't there?
Especially when there's a Dreamcast to be had in droves, at
half the price, and with twenty times as many games. And
let's not forget N64. Sure, development has slowed to a
crawl, but there's still that attractive price tag.
This Christmas, as with any other, it all boiled down to
having something wrapped and under the tree by December
24th. And with some customers who pre-ordered their
PlayStation 2s being informed that they might have to wait
until March of 2001 to see their systems delivered, it
became clear very quickly that Sony had experienced one of
the biggest missed opportunities in the history of
videogaming.
Electronic Arts Signs On for Xbox Development
---------------------------------------------
To the casual gamer, this story may seem like just a blip
on the radar screen. But do not underestimate the
importance of what happened just a few weeks ago. For new
game systems to succeed, they must have strong developer
support, and EA is just about the heaviest heavyweight
around. Their consistently strong output for PlayStation is
a big part of the reason that Sony is the King of the Hill
right now. The amount of money and talent they have to
offer can lift a fledgling system into the ranks of serious
contention.
Why do you think that Peter Moore, President and CEO of
Sega of America, fought so tirelessly to get EA to develop
for Dreamcast? It's because he knew that they would be
crucial to bringing Sega back from the brink of destruction
following the demise of the Saturn. The fact that Electronic
Arts has steadfastly refused to commit to Dreamcast may be
one huge reason why the system continues to struggle,
despite its strong software line-up and low price.
When Microsoft announced their enormous list of Xbox
developers a few months ago, you would have thought that
the staggering number on the list would be the big story.
Instead, the loudest cry within the industry was "Where's
EA?" It looked like the powerhouse would remain loyal to
PlayStation. That was until a few weeks ago, when the
company announced that they had been meeting with Microsoft
all along, that they were even part of the company's
advisory board for the new system, and that they plan to
have at least ten Xbox launch titles on store shelves next
Fall. When you make your predictions about who will win the
"Console War," you have to factor in the sheer firepower of
Electronic Arts.
SegaNet Works!
--------------
A consistently low-latency, nationwide, console-oriented
games network at 56K? Yeah, right. And the Supreme Court
will decide who our next president will be. While gamers
across America have been busy not buying PlayStation 2s,
they have been busy hooking up with each other on NFL 2K1,
NBA 2K1, and Quake III Arena. If you wanted to come up with
a phrase that perfectly defined the Year 2000 in gaming, it
would have to be "No one thought that..." SegaNet is a big
part of the reason that's true.
"No one thought that" SegaNet would work, except for Peter
Moore. And a few thousand other Sega employees. Moore has
been adamant in his support of a narrowband console network
that works now, while other companies insist on waiting for
a broadband future that is having its fair share of
troubles. Sega's gamble of packaging every Dreamcast with a
56K modem appears to be paying off. Their SegaNet-enabled
software titles are selling like Krispy Kreme doughnuts,
and the word "lag" has been as foreign to the DC online
experience as wins have become to the Chicago Bulls.
Oh, and about that broadband thing? Sega's going to start
offering a broadband adapter for the Dreamcast pretty soon.
With their installed base of online gamers growing ever
larger before Sony and Nintendo's networks (and consoles!)
have even launched, Sega looks to be in good shape to
survive the turbulent, transitional 2001.
The End of Final Fantasy on PlayStation
---------------------------------------
Weren't we just talking about the importance of strong
development in the life of a videogame system? Squaresoft
shares a lot of the credit with EA for pumping the
lifeblood into PlayStation. The last three Final Fantasy
games have each been epic events in Sony's interactive
timeline, becoming benchmarks in the evolution of role-
playing adventure games-really, of games at large. Square
has shown that such games can be deep, enriching,
engrossing, and fun all at the same time. Any other company
that makes an RPG, even one for a different console, has
Final Fantasy to live up to.
Final Fantasy IX marks the end of an era, and single-
handily passes the role-playing torch on to the next
generation of videogaming. As the last Final Fantasy game
to be developed for PlayStation, it wisely returned to its
roots of the true fantasy-RPG with it's diminutive,
cartoonish characters and magical storyline. Sure, we'll
probably be amazed by FFX for PlayStation2, and we'll
herald the advent of the multiplayer era with FFXI. But it
was the original PSX that gave birth to the greatest RPG
legacy ever conceived, and even with their astounding
graphics and envelope-pushing gameplay, the Final Fantasies
of the future will still have to follow in the footsteps of
their 32-bit predecessors.
