~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 arrived in from Activision
Australia, and this week we put the game down for a few
seconds to bring you a full cover story review. I have to
admit though, all these latest Dreamcast releases make it
seem like we can't write a bad review, heh. This is however
the start of a new addition to our reviews, a 2nd Opinion
from a younger gamer.
Then in Question and Answer we've got everything from
surround sound to the Sega Master System, from Phantasy
Star Online to Sonic Jam and much more. Keep the questions
coming, but please note we've already covered the Free ISP
issue. For those who missed it check out Page 3 this week
for a re-print.
Next up is Playcycle, a website I've been beta testing
recently that is now up and running. But what makes this
so special is that it's an online auction site, just for
video games. Full details along with their press release on
Page 4. While we're talking about Playcycle too, if you
have any feedback what so ever, good or bad, they would
like you to please send it to Mike at mfarago@playcycle.com
Finally this week is the last for your chance to win $400
worth of Dreamcast products from Blade.cc and Dreamcast
Weekly Magazine. To enter, we hope you've been collecting
the keywords over the past three weeks, because here you
can find the fourth and final word at this address:
http://www.powerup.com.au/~gamers/dc.htm
Now to enter please send us an e-mail with the subject,
"Gimmie Dreamcast Stuff!" complete with all four keywords
inside. The winner will be drawn at random on January 22nd
and will be contacted via e-mail for further details.
Good luck, and until next time, Happy Gaming!
>>>> Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 Review
     -- Written by Graham Parker
Even if you've never played Tony Hawk Skater, every gamer
is aware that it's one seriously awesome title. Now not
long after the original hit the Dreamcast, the sequel is
here and we're ready to ollie and grind once again with the
pros.
First you'll be greeted with the full motion video, which
works perfectly as a reminder that the amazing tricks your
about to pull off in the game are all actually done in real
life. Later, after completing each character you'll open up
full length videos of their real life counterparts in
action, and believe me you'll have a whole new respect for
the game after watching these. So don't skip past the intro
as so many people often do, and if you must have a reason
to watch, there's some painful looking mistakes in there
too ;)
But then it's time to get into serious, and from the title
screen you have access to Career mode, Trick Attack, Free
Skate, and a two player match. Career mode would be a wise
first choice, as you have to complete the single player
levels before you can ride them in other modes. Here your
given a set of objectives to complete, and unlike in the
original where you were given video's for showing off your
skills, this time your after the money. Each objective met
earns you a little more cash, and when you reach a certain
amount, usually around half the tasks, the next level is
opened up and ready for conquering.
Tasks range from finding five letters to spelling out
SKATE, to simply scoring over a certain amount of points,
to just performing the right tricks in the right place.
Your given two minutes to play each level, and that's only
time to complete one or two objectives, so thankfully the
restart option is always handy and doesn't take long to
load.
Once you've furthered your career and are starting to make
a virtual living out of skateboarding, you can spend your
cash on upgrading your characters stats, buying a new
board, or even learning new tricks.
Now if one of the 13 real life skaters isn't for you,
including Steve Caballero, Eric Koston, and Rodney Mullen
in this sequel, building your character from scratch and
saving him to your VMU (takes around 14 blocks) is the
only way to go. Wether you want to make him look like a
real cool dude, or a half naked guy wearing a shower cap
is up to you, but the possibilities are all there. You can
even make the old skipper, Gilligan, or how about Freddy
Kruger. The only fault that could be found in the
character editor is that designing your dream skate girl
is out of the question.
Adding even more to the desires of those that bought the
original game recently, the developers have pulled out all
the stops here and thrown in a park editor. No, thrown in
is the wrong words, because this editor was clearly
designed with some serious thought, planning, and testing.
Something normally reserved for PC gamers only, your
finally been given the chance to push your imagination and
skills to the limit, with an insane barrage of ramps,
rails and fences you've built yourself. Ones that would
even make Tony Hawk himself think twice about trying.
While you are limited to a fairly small space, and don't
have access to quite all items used in the real levels,
there's still plenty of room for huge half pipes, pools
to skate around, oh and a few evil spike pits ;) Best of
all the level design interface is easy to use, doesn't
really require reading of the manual beforehand, and takes
up very little space on your VMU (around 17 blocks).
Ok so once you've designed your level, and put the starting
positions in, including throwing player two right in front
of some deadly spikes (that person knows who they are,
hehe) your ready for some real point racking action. The
best place to try out your park is in two player, which
opens a wide variety of game modes. Naturally there's the
trick attack, where you battle it out for a set number of
minutes and try to top each others score. But then there's
the more original Graffiti mode, where you try and "tag"
the most spots around the level in your players color, and
other skaters can wipe over your tag by performing a better
trick.
The finally there's my personal favourite, known as
"Horse". Players take it in turn to perform one trick in
ten seconds, then the other person tries to top it. The
first person who fails to beat the score gets a letter,
and the first one to spell "Horse" loses. Well that, or
what ever word you decided on in the beginning. It may not
be the most action packed two player game, but believe me,
you've never felt so much pressure to pull of a trick
perfectly. Of course if your against a player with more
skill than yourself, you can bite the bullet and get him to
decrease his characters skills, or increase your own. The
only fault I can make here is that it would have been quite
possible to make "Horse" a 4-player game, as only one
player goes at a time, but perhaps we'll see that in the
next sequel.
Well, never having spent so much time talking about just
the gameplay, the graphics and sound have gone almost
un-mentioned so far. That has to be a good sign, and indeed
Tony Hawk 2 is a tribute to why we play games in the first
place. Just don't buy this game before you've got a big
homework assignment to do, or your about to go on vacation,
because believe me, you'll find it impossible to put down
there's so much to see and do. Some of the single player
levels even take a refreshingly different approach, giving
you one minute in which to impress the judges and beat all
twelve other skaters.
But given that the game was originally on the Playstation,
there should naturally be those who question the Dreamcast
versions graphics. Luckily the developers have done a good
job improving the draw distance, letting you see the games
unbelievably huge levels, at the same time splashing on a
new coat of textures. The game almost looks like it was the
designed for the Dreamcast, but not quite. The polygon
count, while certainly upped from the 32-bit version, still
looks like it has the bones of a Playstation underneath the
new graphics.
Finally there's the soundtrack, which receives no less than
rock'n beats from some of the big bands, starting with Rage
Against the Machine. Then if variety even came into
question, there are 20 different songs packed onto the
Dreamcast's GD-ROM.
Every aspect of the original has been built on, from new
multiplayer modes, to the level builder, to a new combo
trick system with infinite possibilities. Overall if you
think you've been there, done that with videogame
skateboarding, take a look at Tony Hawk 2 and you won't
look back.
Gameplay:    99% -- It reminds us why we play games in the
                     first place.
Graphics:    93% -- Pretty good, but it's still built from
                     a Playstation game at heart.
Sound:       96% -- A real life soundtrack helps to keep
                     you from getting tired with some of
                     the harder challenges.
Lastability: 99% -- If you could only ever buy one game for
                     the four or so years you own a
                     Dreamcast, this would be a perfect
                     choice.
OVERALL:     99% -- The "Shenmue" for skaters? Could be!
>>>> 2nd Opinion
     -- Written by Andrew Lugg
After each review here at Dreamcast Weekly we receive
several e-mails from parents wondering if their kids might
enjoy the game. Hence from now on we'll be bringing you a
second opinion on each title from a younger gamers point
of view. This week twelve year old Andrew Lugg reviews
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (forcing him to play the game,
aren't we cruel? lol!)
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 has reasonable graphics, yet still
far better than on the Playstation version. It's easier to
get the hang of than the original, and has many other
advantages like a park editor. Although the park editor has
cool items like a pit of spikes, it's sometimes fiddly to
use because it doesn't have a menu so you can see all the
items at once. Searching through the items can slow down
building a good park.
My favourite of all the levels is at the local high school,
which is filled with poles and ramps, plus a swimming pool
which is cool for grinding. By the way, a useful tip to
give you multiple scores is to make a small jump while
grinding, then land back again and continue on the trick.
Overall even though I don't like skateboarding, I really
enjoyed this game!
While Sega.net offers the best in online gaming for your
Dreamcast, there's still some who would rather go with
the other ISP's, and for those we bring you a free ISP that
has been tested and does indeed work with the Dreamcast.
Thanks to Gobbles for this info...
For US readers, I have found a free ISP for those out
there looking for one to use with a Dreamcast. All you need
to do is sign up at http://www.startfree.com
There is no need to download the program, just go and get
a local access number. On the Dreamcast, put the number
in, and for your username it needs to be written as
username@startfree.com Oh don't forget the password! For
the DNS entries put 0.0.0.0 for both 1 and 2. Do this and
you are on your way to surfing for free.
>>>> Playcycle - http://www.playcycle.com/
Last year in our "Sega On The Web" page we highlighted the
best, and strangest, Sega auctions on Ebay. But after that
I became involved in another online auction site, one
designed just for video games, and I knew these guys were
onto a great idea. As one of the beta testers of Playcycle
I had to go through the site as it was being built, testing
every aspect and button. While it did look a little messy
back then ;) the website is now fully up and running,
looking better than ever, and in fact they just sent out
their first press release last week.
Because the site is designed only for videogames, naturally
it suits us far better than Ebay, but it also has a simple
billing system, $1 for each successful auction, and that's
all. So even if you sell a collectable for $15,000 it only
costs you $1 to list it. Personally I thought that, along
with some other original features such as Wizard Points
and a ranking board for members make Playcycle the first
true auction site for gamers.
It's been great seeing the site built up, and now I'm proud
to publish their first press release. Finally they have
asked if any of our readers check out the site, and you
have any feedback what so ever, good or bad, they would
like you to send it to Mike at mfarago@playcycle.com
"All Games All The Time"
NEWTON, Mass., January 9, 2001 - Playcycle, Inc. launches
http://www.playcycle.com/, a web-based exchange designed
exclusively for the video gaming community.
At Playcycle, Members can post Seeks and Offers for the new
and used video games, consoles and accessories they want to
buy and sell. Posting and membership are both FREE. The
owner of the listing is billed only $1 in the event of a
successful transaction, and there are no other required
fees.
Dedicated exclusively to the video gaming community,
Playcycle gives these enthusiasts the greatest flexibility
when they are looking to buy or sell video games, consoles,
and accessories. At last, gamers can:
· Tell the community what they want to buy, as well as what
   they have to sell
· Choose from fixed price, negotiable price, auction, or
   reverse auction formats
· Find exactly the games they want, and compare them
   quickly and easily
· See the entire market in real time across gaming
   platforms and transaction formats
From the beginning, the Playcycle team worked with video
gaming enthusiasts across the country to create a site
that fulfills the needs of one of this nation's fastest
growing communities. The overall secondary video game
market is valued at $1.3 billion.
Michael Thomasson, of Good Deal Games (Lexington, Ky.), a
renowned online game dealer, was so impressed that he has
made Playcycle the premier outlet for two newly published
Sega CD games, Star Strike and Bug Blasters: The
Exterminators, for which he has recently secured
publishing and distribution rights.
"The uncomplicated fee structure and unique interface will
draw gaming enthusiasts and dealers alike" Mr. Thomasson
said, "And since the site is dedicated only to video games,
Playcycle can assess and respond to the ongoing needs of
this close-knit community, as they did when building the
site."
The Playcycle team will continue to improve
http://www.playcycle.com/ in the months ahead, adding
newly requested functionality and content.
>>>> Old Systems Do it Better
Q) I would like to know if anyone knows where I could get
   a US Master System. Thanks.
   - Rodrigo Suarez
   I was wondering if you knew where I could get a copy of
   "Sonic Jam" for the Sega Saturn. No one seems to carry
   it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
   - J. Hasenour
A) Ebay.com and Funcoland.com are your best choices. I also
   believe that segadojo.com now has a message board
   dedicated to game trading.
   There is also a strong rumor going around about a Sonic
   Anniversary Pack for the Dreamcast that would collect
   all of his previous games, and put them on one disk.
   No clue about a release date of course. Maybe after e3?
>>>> Questions now Cost $25,000 Each
Q) 1. Will there be any rail simulation such as Densha
       De-Go come out for Dreamcast in Europe?
   2. When will Europe get a new browser?
   3. Should I buy Half-Life for Dreamcast or for the PC?
   4. Is the Dreamcast Camera worth getting?
      Sincerely. - Hakuna Matata
A) 1. I believe that Microsoft has some sort of Train
       simulator coming to the PC. Other then that... we
       should get Coster Works, a roller coaster simulator
       on the Dreamcast.
   2. Early 2001 is the latest date given by Sega Europe.
   3. Depends what you want. Better graphics will be on
       the Dreamcast, also that 'exclusive' mission pack.
   4. If it ever comes out...
>>>> Rockets Heard from Behind
Q) Are there any games out or to be out soon in 5.1
   Surround Sound for the Dreamcast? - Mike West
A) Quake 3 Arena is the only title at this stage that
   supports support sound, however Sega's latest
   development libraries offer companies an easy way to
   include sound like that, so we expect more in the near
   future.
>>>> Mystery Rebate Solved
Q) Hey. Do the European Dreamcast owners get Sega's $20
   rebate or is only in USA/Japan? I'm a registered user in
   Finland and no one seems to know nothing about it.
   -Kid L.
A) Hmm...no. I haven't heard of a $20 dollar rebate. If
   you were referring to the $200 dollar rebate that gamers
   in the USA got when registering for Sega.net, No. I'm
   pretty sure no one else got the offer.
