Pong Doubles
Pong Doubles was released by Atari Inc in late 1973. It is the four player capable version of their game Pong featuring largely the same rules as its predecessor. The game is notable as the first game released by Atari to use the word "video game" as part of its advertising.
Gameplay[edit]
Pong Doubles is a ball-and-paddle game for two or four players. Two players each control two potentiometers on their side of the cabinet, which each controls a single paddle capable of reaching the top and bottom of the screen. The goal is to pass the opposing team's paddles and score eleven or fifteen points - definable by the operator.
History[edit]
Nolan Bushnell intended to release a four-player version of Pong from early in the original's lifespan. He held off on releasing the game while production of Pong was ongoing as he did not want to cannibalize sales of the original. However, after Allied Leisure released the four-player Tennis Tourney, Atari had no choice but to respond with its own variant.
