>>>> Surf'n With PlanetWeb
- Written by Mina Guzman
When I first heard that Sega was going to use a custom Web Browser for
the Dreamcast rather than to have either Microsoft port IE or Netscape
Corp. port NS to the console, I was a bit skeptical, in fact the first
screen shots I've seen of "PlanetWeb Browser" for DC left a lot to be
desired.
Being that I don't judge a book by its cover I decided to subject myself
to this Browser for 2 weeks exclusively. I kept off my Mac for net
surfing and used my Dreamcast only. I am going to give you the lowdown
on what I think of this DC Browser. Keep in mind that I would probably
be considered an expert web surfer (self-proclaimed title, hehe) as I
have used nearly all browsers on all platforms and viewed all types of
web sites in all settings possible. We'll start off with the Basics.
HTML RENDERING:
---------------
Let us start off with how well this browser renders HTML.
- TABLES: Some of the problems I've had with the browsers I've used are
that some choke when trying to render a page full of tables. I can't
really say that the PlanetWeb Browser does any better or worse because
with light tables it runs smooth and with complex tables it will stagger
a bit as it is loading. The same goes for any Browser (unless you're on
a 500MHz machine and above).
My biggest gripe with the tables is the inability it has to place
Background Images within the Cells of the Tables. It only goes as far
as Background Colors, so if you make a Site with Tables and Images
within the Background, be sure to also use a default color or else you
will get nothing.
- FORMS: The forms rendered are pretty much the same standard form
(input fields and submit buttons) that you see using any browser. My
only gripe with PlanetWeb's is that when you choose something in terms
of like a Category from a dropdown menu list, you have to click on the
"checkmark" next to it or else your request will not go through when
you hit Submit. Since I was unable to find a Keyboard Shortcut to select
it, I had to use the DC Pad to select. That is a total bummer and it can
get quite annoying at times, but it is useable.
A Major problem with using Forms on this Browser is that if you type out
a lot of info, you will have problems editing it. This very document
you're reading was all typed out on the Dreamcast DC Browser, when I
began to edit it, the System would stagger for 5 seconds when I just
tried to delete 1 character, and then it would stagger again for another
5 seconds to replace it. That is such a bummer.
The Second Major problem also comes with submitting info. Lets put for
example, a Forum. When I go to a Gaming Forum I like to debate and input
my opinions about articles. Once I type out a long story about how Sega
will rule the world I hit the submit button. Ooops! I forgot to input my
user name, so I clicked back, and what do you know? My entire article
was totally gone! I was very upset… and it was then that I discovered
that it doesn't store that info into memory. Beware, if you fill out a
large form with a lot of info, be sure to triple check your work before
you submit, or else you can lose your data like I did. That needs to be
fixed. Please!
- JAVASCRIPT: Okay, this is also a toss up, and I am guessing that it
depends on the script that the web site is using. Sometimes the
PlanetWeb browser will choke and sometimes it will glide. Most of the
time I get Java errors using this browser, so that adds another bummer
to the bummer list. At least scripts I care about work.
- FRAMES: "Someone burn my eyes out with a hot pike!" was my reaction
when I first entered a site using Frames. Not only does it look awful
(huge borders around frames) but it functions very poorly. You have to
actually click and select a frame to navigate it, and when you reach the
end of a frame your cursor scales out towards you and covers up about a
good 50 pixels of cool site you could be seeing. :P Don't get me wrong,
it is fully functioning, it's just a pain for an advanced web junkie
such as myself to use. If you ever make a DC Friendly site, make sure to
not use frames!
- FLASH: It appears that burning my eyes out with a hot pike didn't help
much as I was yet subjected to yet another disappointment with this
browser. Pages using Macromedia components such as Flash "do not" look
pretty. I beg the kind people of PlanetWeb to please look into it. I
personally see Flash driven pages as the future of the Web. This browser
does not show it. The renderings of Flash files are nearly laughable at
times. It appears that even a simple Flash document can use up a lot of
resources as you'd be lucky to get 24 frames per second of animation out
of it. (Did I mention I am a Flash Developer Goddess?) What really hurt
my inner-child was the lack of "Flash 4" support. Any Flash 4 files you
download will not play sound, and at times it'll even crash your DC.
Bummer, total bummer.
Okay now lets move on to another feature of this Browser.
NAVIGATION:
-----------
One of the most important items in using a browser to surf the Net is
the Navigation. This is very important to me as I need my shortcuts to
move around...
- PAGE SCROLLING: Now this is an area that this browser truly shines
above all I ever used. Can you believe that this baby runs at 60 Frames
Per Second? Yes scrolling through pages is easier than spreading butter
on your toast, and much smoother too! My eyes were in ecstasy seeing
websites move up and down at the smoothest rate you can imagine. It
really is great when you're reading long articles and you can use the
control pad triggers to scroll up and down smoothly. PlanetWeb, I salute
you!
- COMMAND CLUSTER: This is yet another area in which this browser laughs
(and points) at other browsers. The Command cluster is a girl's best
friend (I'm sure you guys would love it too). All you have to do is hit
"Start" on your DC Pad and move around the options, or hit "Esc" on your
DC Keyboard and use the Arrow Keys to navigate. You get Back, Forward,
Reload, Mail, Address Book, Options, Home, Stop and Exit. Each of these
can be accessed easily and in about 10 - 15 minutes you can easily
become a pro at it! PlanetWeb, I salute you again!
- BOOKMARKS AND VMU SUPPORT: Bookmarks have never been easier to store
than on your very own VMU, yet another excellent feature of this
browser. How many people can say they have bookmarks to their favorite
sites in their pockets? You can! If you want to look cool at parties a
VMU is a must for using this. It's fast, easy and very helpful. My only
complaint is that you can't rename the titles, but it's a small nag.
PlanetWeb, if my arms weren't tired of saluting you already, I'd salute
you again.
Now on to one of the most important areas of web browsing, the display.
PAGE DISPLAY:
-------------
I guess this could have fit into the "HTML" rendering subject above, but
this needs to be its own category.
- RESOLUTION: At the thought of viewing pages at 640x480, I prepared the
evil hot pikes of doom to cleanse my virgin eyes of the hideousness that
this resolution would bring. I am used to surfing the net at 1024x768
and higher. I admit, this almost made me not to want to even consider
using this browser. Luckily for us all, it pulls it off very well. A few
sites I visited looks very well in this resolution and some others I had
to scroll left and right (that is so gross!). But my verdict... Good Job
PlanetWeb! While I prefer a higher resolution for my web surfing needs,
this pulls off very well considering the limitations of the TV. People
who are new to the net and never used a PC wouldn't know 640x480 to
1024x768 anyway, so it's a pretty safe bet none will complain.
- PAGE LAYOUT: Now this somewhat it a struggle. You all know that a good
looking web site is as good as the web master, and how the page was
programmed to be. I've been doing Web Sites for years now and I put this
to the test. First of all you have to be very specific about your
Tables, Image Alignments and Text. The PC Browsers give you a lot of
room to be lazy, but this browser likes to layeth the smacketh down upon
you when your HTML is looking like you let the neighbor's dog program it
for you. So all I can say is that some pages look as good on this
browser as they do on other browsers on other platforms.
The major problem I have here is the awful text! Yuck! The default text
(and the ONLY text available) is very nasty and disappointing. It makes
even the most awesome looking web sites look like something coming out
of Newbie Sites Anonymous. The text is huge and clunky and it sometimes
it has the nerve to push tables and images out of alignment (which is
why you have to be specific about your tables and images). This causes a
very cruddy effect and I pray to those at PlanetWeb to at least include
fonts such as "Verdana, Comic Sans MS, Helvetica, Geneva, Times, Chicago
and Old English. (Okay, the Old English is just for personal use. ;) If
this browser had at least one of these fonts, this browser would have
been a gift from the Heavens... oh well, in the next Version? Oh and
PLEASE don't Anti-Alias the text, the TV makes everything fuzzy as it
is, I can do without Anti-Aliasing and fuzziness around the text I am
reading.
The Last item in "Page Display" will be the Zoom In and Out Features. I
gotta tell you, it's a really nice feature, I like to Zoom Into images,
and it's even fun sometimes. It's very simple to use. Hit "Y" once and
you Zoom in, hit again to Zoom in more, hit it once more and you're
back to normal. I already know what most of you probably have in mind
for this feature, but I won't even get into that part mind you... ;)
Overall the Zoom In is an excellent feature to this Browser.
THE REST:
---------
Okay I couldn't think up a better title, but this will cover the IRC
Chat, Emailing and General web Surfing.
- IRC CHAT:
dude: heres my kewl website, check it out girl! www.dude.com
Mina: Sorry, I can't see it now, I am on a Dreamcast. In order for me to
view it I have to leave chat, and it's sometimes a pain to re-login to
chat rooms.
dude: what do you mean?
Mina: What I mean is that unlike a PC/Mac I can't have multiple
applications open, you know Multitasking. Anyway the Dreamcast is just a
Game Console with Internet abilities...
dude: sweeeeeeeet...
Mina: You can surf the web, check email, play games, listen to music and
chat like we are now.
dude: so U sayin you cant see my web site? www.dude.com??!
Mina: What I am saying is that although this IRC client for Dreamcast
rocks (and even easier than most I've used on PC) I can only either
chat, or surf...
dude: oh...
Mina: So that means I'll have to check your site later. ^_^
dude: ok, so how old are you? where are you from??
Mina: ...
- EMAILING: Now this is email baby! I'll make this simple. You just
choose the mail options in the Command Cluster (considering you have
your mail servers all setup), a window opens up, and bam! Email service
is here! I haven't checked or sent mail this easy since I started to use
it. Gotta love it! Be aware, you want to use a Keyboard with this option
(if you don't, you'll be turning me into a liar about this category).
Also the VMU shows you how many emails you have in your BOX, it has a
cutesy little Envelope and the number next to it. I only wished it told
you how many "New" mails you have and not just the "total" number you
have. Also it'd be nice if it beeped a funny beep when you got new mail.
:P
Special Items: Now the main question probably hovering around your mind,
"What about special web content such as Audio, Video and Images?"
Well, let me break them up a bit instead of blitzing you (I'm a NFL2k1
fan too BTW. ;) with the entire thing.
- MUSIC: You can download MP3s, but you can only do 1 at a time, you
cannot save them, but you can listen to them over and over again as long
as you don't close that window. I had problems loading MP3s higher than
4.5MB, I do not know why... possibly RAM limitations…
- VIDEO: As far as I know and experimented with, you can only download
MPEG Sofdec (TM of CRI) format movies (.sfd). I've tried Quicktime and
AVI formatted movies (.mov, .qt and .avi), I also tried MPEG (.mpeg,
.mpg) and RealPlayer (.rm, .ram) formats. None worked, total bummer! But
at least the Sofdec movies you can get at PlanetWeb are in FULLSCREEN
baby! Although only about 20 seconds long, it's Fullscreen :) Gotta love
it. At most it took me 5 - 8 minutes to download one, but be sure to
clear your Dreamcast (reset it) before try for another, or else you get
out of memory messages!
- IMAGES: If using a DC to surf the net, you'll come across some images
that you gotta have, unfortunately you will not be able to save them, at
least not on your current VMU. Oh well, you can at least bookmark it! :)
Show it off at parties, "Look guys, I bookmarked my favorite JPEGS in my
VMU!" You'll be so cool. :)
Another major gripe is the fact that it doesn't support Transparent GIFs
so any GIF you see will have its Background color and its nasty. :( It
does however support Animated GIFs but it still plays them very choppy
and it could have done a better job.
- IMPROVEMENTS: Now, here's a small list that I think can be improved
(or hope) if there is a next version of this browser:
- Faster HTML Rendering
- Better Java Support (IRC/and other applets too please!)
- Better Frames Navigation
- Better default font (or include more than one!)
- Better Tables Support
- Transparent GIF Support
- Able to categorize Bookmarks and able to edit them
- Flash 4 support with overall better Flash Rendering.
- Keyboard shortcuts
- Alt+tab style of multitasking. IRC and web surfing at the same time?
- Better Memory Management of the Browser using DC resources. Hate to
clear up the RAM to download a new file.
- More supported Video formats (.mpg?)
- Anti-Aliasing Options Off or On for Text
- Better Forms/Data Input Support (can we make it remember data input?)
And my last gripe, please make the Browser load faster! This is
Dreamcast! I've played games that loaded faster! :P
- OVERALL: Well, that is my experience with the Dreamcast Browser. My
Overall rating for it will be (believe it or not):
PlanetWeb DC Browser - 9/10
It actually has grown on me and at times it's a better way to surf the
net. For those who do not own a PC/Mac, this is probably the next best
thing. It does all that the other platforms do, just in a different
manner. Its learning curve is simple and fast and in no time you'll be
gliding.
I've taken a few long trips away from home, the DC is like a portable
Web Surfer for when I needed to check my email on the go. That made me
love it more. It costs less than a Lap Top and plays better games with
the inclusion of Net abilities.
PlanetWeb, you've done a killer job with this browser... with a few of
those suggested adjustments I've listed, you can actually rival that of
MSIE and Netscape Communicator... I personally like to see a PC/Mac
version of this proggy.

>>>> Sega Success In Europe
Hot on the heals of the Dreamcast's extra sales in America comes an
announcement that Europeans are just as into gaming on Sega's console,
buying up one million units in the first year. 2.5 million games have
been purchased, and almost half of the users are online and registered
with Dreamarena, the European equivalent of Sega.net. That's great news
for Sega, and just what they need before the Playstation 2's launch. JF
Cecillon, the CEO of Sega Europe stated how the sales have exceeded all
their expectations, and that "gamers can look forward to some stunning
new games over the next few months and beyond."
Also worth noting is a new Sega DVD package going on sale from October
30th, including a Dreamcast console, controller, a DVD player (separate
from the console), and a copy of Chu Chu Rocket. With £299.99 as the
asking price, it could be the key to enter the next generation of home
entertainment for Europeans this Christmas.

Each week here we'll keep you up to-date with the latest rumors going
around, but please remember these are only rumors.
>>>> Dreamcast Upgrade
This past week has brought rumors of a Dreamcast upgrade in to the
light once again, and with the recent announcement of the Naomi 2, it's
no surprise. The rumors suggest a 3D Expansion Card which will
quadruple your consoles power, making it equal to the Naomi 2 board.
The thought of arcade perfect conversions of Planet Harriers and Virtua
Fighter X are mighty tempting, but given the success rate of console
upgrades, and the fact the Dreamcast is only two years old (one year in
the states), and we wouldn't suggest you hold your breath on this one.
Just one look at Ferrari 355, Shenmue, Ecco The Dolphin, Metropolis SR
and Quake 3 Arena proves the Dreamcast is far from in need of a power
boost. - Tails
