>>>> Quake 3 Arena Review
     -- Written by Tails

Since the 5th of June 1992 when PC gamers got their first taste of blood
with Wolfenstein 3D, the game of first person shooting has been
redefined and perfected like a well aged Capcom fighter. Now ID bring
their latest masterpiece, Quake 3 Arena, to the Dreamcast and in perhaps
the most ambious PC to console conversion, how does the game turn out
on Sega's $149 console?

Well after watching the games explosive intro, three presses of a
button later and I was fragging online... or more like being fragged
online :) The games newly designed interface is perfect for console
users, and all the information needed to get online with Quake 3 is
already loaded from your Dreamcast's memory.

Choosing an arena to battle it out on is easy, although perhaps it's a
little too over-simplified. The game doesn't have a chat room where you
can meet up with mates or study your opponents before you go in for the
kill, and there's also no search mode to find a friend online. While you
can type in your own server address, an opponent search would have been
more helpful.

Still, all this is nothing compared to the fun of chasing a human
through the well designed levels of Quake 3 Arena. Even living half way
around the world in New Zealand, I could play without lag being too much
of a problem. Now that's impressive! Speaking of lag, the game does a
good job of hiding online gaming's ugly side, making sure your screen
never freezes up.

After around one hour to get used to the controls and the difference
between trying to gun down a human compared to a computer, there was a
wide grin spread over my face... this is what I play games for. The
deathmatch action of Quake 3 Arena is gaming at in it's purest form,
and it takes skill, precision, fast thinking, and above all quick
reactions to win at this. As I said it's a system that's been
re-defined and perfected over the years, and it shows.

But for those who prefer the single player experience, developers ID
have you covered. The game takes you through five levels, each with
four different arenas. After the first "training" level to get you in
on the action, the game throws three trigger happy CPU characters
into the mix, and they all have a taste for to kill anything but
themselves.

Unlike previous Quake games, even the single player mode is a
deathmatch, and programming the AI proved a worthy challenge for the
people at ID software. Each computer controlled characters think and
act like a real person, and like real humans they will sometimes make
mistakes, for example falling to a fiery death in lava. Without this
impressive AI the single player game would fast become boring and
repetitive, but honestly, I could barely pull myself away from the
game before completing the first difficulty level. With five
difficulty levels to choose from, and cheats to be earned after
finishing each one, you'll be busy for a long, long time.

Once you've worked up your fragging skill, you can invite friends over
for a go at split screen Quake. This was part of the game I had really
high hopes for, but they came crashing down when we tried a three
player match for the first time. For some reason ID removed most of
the levels, and left us with just a tiny selection of small arenas to
choose from. Plus the graphics have been toned down a little, and all
the polygon powerups, weapons and ammo have been replaced with sprites,
somewhat destroying the atmosphere. The result is a rushed looking
split screen mode that the Dreamcast certainly could have handled
better if the effort was put in. True it might have resulted in a delay,
but it's now back to Toy Commander and Fur Fighters for those fun split
screen battles.

Moving on to the graphics, PC users will mock our "high resolution" of
640x480, but using the Dreamcast's chipset, Quake 3 Arena's
revolutionary engine truly shines. Then if that isn't enough for you,
buy a VGA Box and the resolution will be enough to keep any PC owner
who just shelled out thousands quiet.

Along with the impressive graphics, the Dreamcast's sound plays a vital
part in the first person shooting action. Using Surround Sound, those
who have the equipment set up will be able to literally hear their
opponents sneaking up from behind.

But even with all this, Quake 3 would be a disaster if the gameplay
didn't translate well from the PC's keyboard and mouse to your
controller. There's an easy solution to that, to buy a Dreamcast
keyboard and mouse, but that's an expensive option not all of us have.
For example I use the Dream Connector 3in1 to plug in my PC keyboard and
chat to opponents while I use the normal Dreamcast controller to move
and shoot.

Each button on the control scheme can easily be changed to fit your
personal style, but the default is the same as Fur Fighters. Using the
four buttons to move Forward, Back, Left and Right, the analogue stick to
aim your gun, the triggers to jump and shoot, then the D-Pad for
swapping weapons and other options. The controls work as well as you
could hope for, and ID deserve an A for effort. It would have been nice
to see an Auto-aim option to help us compete with those using a mouse,
but it's all part of the Quake skill. In January when the PC gamers are
unleashed upon us, we'll be ready and waiting for the ultimate battle:
Computer vs Console.

Overall Quake 3 Arena is a virtual world where phantasy, skill,
competition, and big guns come together for the biggest battle in
videogaming history. Signup and be part of the action today.

Graphics: 97%
- It's the little things that count, like skeletons in the corner, or
the way bodies don't disappear, but 'melt' into the ground.

Sound: 98%
- Nothing like hearing body parts splatter around the room in surround
  sound baby!

Gameplay: 98%
- Takes around an hour to get used to, then you can't blame it on the
  controller anymore :)

Lastability: 95%
- Lots of single player levels, pity about the split screen mode but the
online gaming more than makes up for that.

OVERALL: 98%
- Shooting fan or not, Quake 3 Arena is videogaming as it's best.

>>>> First Crazy Taxi 2 Details!

Crazy Taxi 2 has been confirmed. The news brings joy to everyone who
became instantly addicted to Sega's arcade madness this year, and
hopes are high for multiplayer modes. But as far as solid details go,
Crazy Taxi 2 will be set in New York this time around, as opposed to
the originals trip around hilly San Francisco.

Due for release around mid-next year, there's no arcade version planned
at this stage, which is good news on the lastability side of things.
New mini-games have been promised, and as I said before we're hoping for
multi-player modes and some sort of internet action.

>>>> Free Phone Calls With The Official Dreamcast Magazine

The next issue of the official Dreamcast Magazine will come with
Dreamcall, a program to allow you free phone calls around the world.
Using the microphone which came with Seaman, you can talk to other
Dreamcast owners doing the same thing. Dreamcall will also be
included in some future online games, and if nothing else it's a
good reason to go out and buy Seaman now! Look out for more details
soon.

>>>> Sega Smash Pack - Blast From The Past

with eight breath-taking zones.

2) Vectorman - Morph into a train, a drill, and a lightning-fast dune

legendary strategy game series.

>>>> Shenmue
     - Written by Hawkmoon

Firstly, I have played through two disks of the Japanese version of
Shenmue. Now I've played the domestic version of the game and I'm very
impressed with the voice acting so far. There have been some odd
conversations between characters, but overall it's very good. I'm really
enjoying the game, now knowing what the heck is going on helps. I love
how the characters give you clues, some are very direct while others
are not.

I spent the first entire day (a Shenmue day) just looking through the
house. I guess because I played the Import version I went through the
house a little quicker, but I still spent the entire Shenmue day
looking through the house. I found some items that I missed in the
import version!

As I started playing, my natural instincts were to move Ryo with the
Analogue stick. It took me a while to get use to the controls and I wish
this were easier, but it does get better after a little while. Getting
Ryo straight and lined up, and not running into walls will take you a
while, but not too long.

The most impressive aspect for me has been the Shenmue Passport GD-ROM.
Since I was never able to access the functions on the import version, I
was very impressed with this additional piece. The passport disc has
some offline and on-line aspects. However, the on-line aspects are the
most impressive. When on-line you can view a detailed bio of every
character you have seen in the game. You can sort the list by males,
females, children, old folks and etc (etc. are dogs, cats, pets). It
shows you a graphic 3D model that you can scale and rotate, plus a
background scene of where you encountered/where the character hangs out
at.

Obviously there are also on-line rankings for several of the mini games
in the game. They can be sorted by World, USA and State. Not sure why
they broke it down by State, but there you have it.

You can receive hints of the game based on what the webpage reads off
of your saved file. They basically don't tell you a whole lot, but a
little advice to get you back on your way through the world of Shenmue.

There is even an area that gives you a weather report for the next few
days in your game. So if you are in day two of the games time, it will
give you the forecast for the next 2 days and it is accurate. This is
simply incredible!

Then there's a great area called Shenmue Goodies. Here you can trade
special cans from the soda machines in exchange for character profile
information. I haven't got a can yet to see what the difference between
this info you get from the trade, and the character profile that is
also available.

The Data Review is really neat. This feature reads your game save and
gives you a complete breakdown of you game. I won't list all of the
items it details, but here are a few a good examples...

A) How many cans of soda, and what type you have drank
B) How many times you've hit a wall
C) How many people you've talked to
etc... One very extensive profile of your game!!!

Some of these options could have probably been available without going
on-line, I'm not sure why they made almost all of these options an
on-line only thing. I can understand some of them because the program
loads in data off the Shenmue server, but the rest, who knows.

I pity those that don't go on the net with their Dreamcast because
this bonus disc is so packed with extras that you could spend days
just reading all the available info. Then just when you think you've
read everything, you could play the game and meet additional
characters that you can now go back and read upon.

Now, I don't know if this can be done in the game, but the character
info gives you the birthdays of all the characters. You can buy candy,
chips, food and other stuff at the stores. If you were to give
characters in the game a bag a chips or candy on their birthday, will
you get something???? I don't if this is possible since I did not see
a "give" option, but imagine the possibilities this could have in
future games. All the data is in there for this to happen (if it
doesn't already).

The packaging of the game is the best ever by Sega of America.
Everything is in color, including the manual, and it's just great. I
have the L.E. version of the game. Basically Sega kept true to the
Japanese packing as much as possible and I thank them for that.

I was in complete awe of this game before (last year) and now it I am
even more amazed. Just imagine what Shenmue 2 will be like, which Yu
Suzuki has said will blow away the first chapter... I can't wait!!!

Shenmue has just replaced my longest standing greatest game ever
made... My previous greatest game was Phantasy Star I on the Sega
Master System. The game was ahead of it's time, and Shenmue has just
replaced it. Shenmue is another game that is ahead of it's time and I
hope that it won't be ignored and missed by a large number of people
like Phantasy Star I.

-Hawkmoon

(The Pitch-black night unfolds with the morning star as its only light.
And thus, the saga begins...) -Shenmue-

Do you have any questions for our Sega know-it-all? Simply e-mail in
your questions to Ross at zondaro@usa.net and look for the answers in
the next issue of Dreamcast Weekly. The best questions will be answered
each week, although we're sorry we are unable to personally reply to all
the e-mails.

But first, here's a little info on our newest staff member...

I hail from a great state where it rains... a bunch. I've been playing
videogames since the old Atari. However, I started in earnest when the
Nintendo 64 came out. Since then I have played pretty much anything I
can get my hands on. The Dreamcast was my first system from Sega. I
still feel very angry that I did not play more of their Genesis games.
Currently I am seeking the higher education required to work for a
company like Sega or Nintendo. My grand plan is to attend the 2001 E3
and get my hands around on the GameCube controller. So until I go nuts
and try and steal a GameCube from the show, I look forward to answering
your questions. - Ross Fisher

>>>> Dusty Light Gun

Q) I was wondering just how much dust my good old light gun was going to
acquire before it got some more things to shoot at? I thought there
was a whole new revolution of FPS with the D-pad/light gun but alas
it appears to be wishful thinking! Thanks Zondaro. - Benjamin

A) A couple games should be heading to the Dreamcast sometime next year,
Confidential Mission by Sega, and Ninja Assault by Namco. Both of
these are currently slated for the arcades on NAOMI boards. Also look
for Sega to release Virtual Cop 2 as part of the "Greatest Hits"
   series sometime after January.

The only game that ever had any plans for the D-pad on the Sega DC
light gun was Take the Bullet. However it seems to have fallen off
   the face of the earth.

>>>> DC IRC Chat

Q) I got my DC since the first day it was launched, I enjoyed the games
since the beginning and still wonder why it is still marked as a
failure! Anyway, I had to get rid of my computer for a while and
I am now left without any IRC access, I read somewhere that the DC
has one, but I can't find the thing. - Dave

A) Great to know that there are people out there enjoying DC games!
If you are looking for an IRC client you need to look no further
then the Web Browser packed in with your Dreamcast. If you no longer
have the disk you can get the browser on all of the new Dreamcast
Monthly demo disks. Once you have the web browser and are online,
you only need to type in this to enter an IRC chat:

You need to fill in the server, port, and channel as appropriate.
