These Nexus memory cards are the best I've ever seen. I've
been using the 4X card since I got the Dreamcast, and it
holds all my saved games while my Sega VMU is used for mini
games. Now I've bought a second one too, in a different
color. They really are a brilliant solution to the lack of
saving space, and each comes with a PC cord, allowing you
to transfer files onto your hard drive, and have almost
unlimited space!! The 2X card is $15.95, the 4X card is
$21.95, and the huge 16X card is $29.95. Buy these are I
assure you, you won't regret it! - http://www.levelsix.com/

Here we are in 2001. The Virtual Reality consoles with
photo-real graphics didn't quite make it in time, but we
still have a few gaming revolutions on the way... starting
with the worlds first online console RPG, Phantasy Star
Online.

Now this is the time everyone does their "Game of the year"
features, and I'm sure you don't need another one. So this
issue we take a different look back on 2000, and roundup
all of the rumors we reported for the first 3/4 of the
year. Which turned out to be true? And which can we go back
and laugh at? Find out below.

Then in the weekly Q&A we hit the books and bring answers
to all your questions. Can you take screen shots with the
VGA Box? When is Half Life due out? Those, Naomi 2
hardware, and more all answered on Page 4.

Finally Blade and Dreamcast Weekly are giving you the
chance to win $400 WORTH OF DREAMCAST GOODIES! To enter,
simply collect four keywords (ok I'll tell you the first
weeks one, but only that... Dural) Write them down, and at
the end send them all to me and we'll pick one lucky winner
who gets posted $400 worth of any Dreamcast products they
have in-stock. This weeks keyword is again at the top of
their Dreamcast page, at...

http://www.powerup.com.au/~gamers/dc.htm

Good luck, and once again sorry about this strange issue!

>>>> Rumors Roundup Review of 2000

The Red Hot Rumors have always been a big part of Dreamcast
Weekly, so this week we turn back the calendar twelve
months and see just which rumors turned out to be right,
and which we can just laugh at. Presenting the rumors
roundup review of 2000...

< Resident Evil Shooter >

After the new year, Capcom got things going again with the
rumors of a Resident Evil light gun shooter. Not to be
confused with Bio Hazard: Gun Survivor, the Playstation
shooter, this was to be an arcade and Dreamcast game. Sadly
we never saw anything more on this game, and the Dreamcast
light gun continues to gather dust. Even the fishing rod
has seen more action ;)

< Virtua Fighter 4 >

Then later in the month we saw Sega confirm Virtua Fighter
4 during London's ATEI 2000 show. No details were revealed,
but it was hinted something more would be shown in February
during Tokyo's AOU show. Even though this was news back in
January, it does have a place here in the rumors roundup
as we've yet to see the first shots of Virtua Fighter X.

< Time Crisis 2 >

January honestly wasn't the best month for reliable rumors,
as when Namco's Time Crisis 2 appeared on Sega Of America's
release list for 2000 and started wide spread rumors all
across the net. The title had already made an appearance on
several other release schedules however, including Ozisoft
of Australia and New Zealand a few months before. As you
know nothing of Time Crisis 2 was ever shown from Namco,
although the rumors continued for months to come :)

< Mr Driller >

Now jumping February, a month filled with Playstation 2 DVD
rumors, and a possible release of NFL 2K in Europe, we
reach March, and the first correct rumor of the year (oh
dear, there goes all respect for our rumors column!).
Namco's next game was heavily rumored to be revealed soon,
and that it would surprise every gamer around the world.
That it did, as the rumors suggested instead of Soul
Calibur 2, we'd see Mr Driller, Namco's new arcade game
based on the System 11 hardware. Two weeks later the news
came, and while Mr Driller is a great puzzler,
disappointment in Namco was clear.

< Model 2 Emulator >

Next up were rumors of a Model 2 emulator and collection of
games, but unlike others this rumor actually began on Sega
of Japan's message board. The forum has a reputation for
deleting rumors that aren't true, yet this one stayed
online, gathering more and more attention. Thoughts of
an arcade perfect racing pack, including Daytona, Sega
Rally, and Manx TT, along with a fighting pack including
Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, and Last Bronx had Sega
fans on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately those who were
convinced Sega was developing the emulator were left
disappointed.

< Dino Crisis >

Beyond the middle of March, Capcom returns to the rumors
page with a Dreamcast port of Dino Crisis. As the PC
version was already in development, and given the ease of
PC to Dreamcast conversions, this was only natural. Capcom
had made no announcements of a version for Sega's console,
but only a week later and the game was confirmed.

< Crazy Taxi 2 On PS2 >

Oh boy. This rumor of Crazy Taxi coming to the Playstation
2 is still going today, although originally it was said to
be Crazy Taxi 2. This would have been a perfect April fools
joke, although the rumors began a few days before April
1st. After the news of Acclaim publishing Virtual On: OT,
and later Ferrari 355, plus the fact CSK (Sega's largest
share holder) handled Shenmue, rumors like this were bound
to happen. But this one has a habit of returning ever few
months with "news" from another website. Wether this turns
out to be true or not remains to be seen, but like I said
back in March, "Here's hoping we don't hear anymore on it
:)"

< Metropolis SR Online >

Back in early April, with one of the many delays to
Metropolis SR, rumors sprouted about a possible world wide
release along with full online racing. The game would be
what Phantasy Star Online is to adventure fans. How the
game would work with no lag popped up as a sore point, but
hey Daytona 2001 works. The next week Bizarre poured fuel
onto the now burning red hot rumors with job openings for
a "Network Games Programmer" and an "office network tech.
support type person" (lol!) on their website. Now skip
ahead to November 2000, and we see a delay for the US and
Japanese versions of Metropolis SR, and the same rumor
comes back up. We'll have to keep our eyes on this one.

< Sonic Party >

First up in late April came the first rumors of another
Sonic game. Not Sonic Adventure 2, but more of a Mario
Party clone, that would be revealed at the E3 show. This
certainly turned out to be true, and Sonic Shuffle was
introduced.

< Broadband Adapter, Online Games, MP3 Player, DVD Player >

An anonymous EB manager brought more rumors during late
April, starting with the prices of upcoming Sega hardware.
The Ethernet Adapter was to be $39.99, then there was an
MP3 Playing VMU at $99.99, and the Dream Eye Camera system
also for $99.99.

The same manager also brought grim news to those hoping for
a DVD playing add-on to the Dreamcast, saying Sega had
little plans for releasing the system.

Finally he also gave a list of games to be playable over
the upcoming Sega Network, including Bomber Man DC (still
coming), Chu Chu Rocket, Half Life, Magic The Gathering,
NBA 2K1, NFL 2K1, Phantasy Star Online, Ready 2 Rumble 2,
Railroad Tycoons 2, Tetris, and Quake 3 Arena. Now that was
one accurate list.

< Sonic Adventure 2 Characters >

Again in the same issue as the last two rumors, this one
proved very reliable in the end. During talks about a
sequel to Sonic Adventure at Sega's San Francisco HQ, the
source of this rumor discovered plenty of character
information.

It was revealed we'd see evil twins to Sonic & Tails,
along with a girl bat named "Nails" and a dark shadowed
version of Sonic. But not only that, there would be evil
Chao's in addition to the return of the normal ones. These
new evil Chao's would be black and have devil shaped tails.

Finally other characters included a big several eyed
monster, a very angelic human looking girl that floats, and
a flying dwarf that looks kinda like Sonic. Interesting
stuff, and given it was right about evil Soinc, perhaps we
will see these other characters after all!

< Price Drop At E3 >

Wether we'd see a price drop at the E3 was the question on
every gamers mind this past May, but the rumors correctly
pointed to a no. Sega would continue to play their $200
rebate, and instead drop the price later in the year,
before the Playstation 2 launch, and around the time
Sega.net opens.

< Taking Off The Sega Brand >

When the Dreamcast was originally designed, the "Sega"
brand was missing from the front of the console. Leaving it
off in case it triggered bad memories of their past hardware
failures was given as the reason, but thankfully Sega
wisely changed their minds and put their logo on.

Now why in May 2000 would they think about taking off the
logo again? Who knows, but that was one of the weeks
rumors, and not surprisingly one we didn't hear any more on
in the future.

< Daytona USA 2 >

Despite the game being absent from Sega's line up shown at
the E3 show, Daytona USA 2 was rumored to still be deep in
development at Sega Of Japan. Apparently there was some
license issues to work out with EA before the game is
announced, which was quite possibly true, although with
Hasbro Interactive instead of EA, and naturally Daytona
2001 instead of Daytona 2.

< Orge Battle >

Enix's strategy RPG was rumored to be on the way to Sega's
Dreamcast console later last May. The game was originally
on the SNES back in 1995, followed by a sequel, Tactics
Orge, but more recently both titles have been re-released
on the Playstation. This game never did surface, which is
a real shame.

< Merger On It's Way >

At the start of June we brought rumors of two companies
planning to tie the knot. Ozisoft Australia and New Zealand
being the first, and GT Interactive being the other.

< Lunar 3 >

Just the thought of a such a game is enough to get fans of
the 2D RPG series drooling again. Of course the minds
behind the Lunar titles is none other than Gamearts, most
recently famous for Grandia II. Back in June, and in the
Official Dreamcast Magazine #5 they had an interview with
Takeshi Miyaji (the general manager of Gamearts) about
Grandia II. When asked about a possible 3rd game in the
Lunar series appearing on Dreamcast, mr Miyaji replied, "It
is a rumor... Mmmmm.. A secret. I can't say anything quite
yet. I would like to, but that does not mean it will be
released. I mean, I'm not the one who decides the line-up,
but...." True he may not decide the line-up, but he is the
General Manager. This is one rumor that could still be
valid today, and perhaps we'll see Lunar 3 being revealed
in 2001.

< Quake... 1 >

Titanium Studios who ported 85% of the original Quake to
the Dreamcast in their spare time were rumored to be going
for the rights to release the game after all the e-mails
they received pleading them to finish the title. In the
end they didn't get the rights, but we did get Quake 3
Arena :)

< Crazy Taxi & Virtua Tennis Sequels >

Between late June and mid-July rumors were very slow, a
tradition in the games industry with the summer lull. But
now they were back with rumors of two arcade sequels. As
Sega took five spots in the top ten arcade games in Japan,
it was without a doubt there would be more on the way.
Crazy Taxi 2 and Virtua Tennis 2 were both rumored, and
to date they have both been confirmed.

< More On Lunar 3 >

Lunar 3 comes back into the spot light with a comment from
Mr. Miyaji on the possibility about returning to the world
of Lunar. He stated that he likes the Lunar series and he'd
definitely like to see the series continue, but he could
confirm nothing.

< $50 Price Drop >

As August began, and the end of Sega's $50 rebate offer
drew closer, rumors of a $50 price drop were picking up.
At the end of August when the promotion ended, the price
did indeed drop.

< Seaman 2 >

Could Sega's talking fish be back for more? Not to be
confused with the updated 2000 version released in Japan,
these were rumors of an all new sequel. Including the
natural updates like improved voice recognition, the game
was rumored to include online expansion, like downloadable
voices, or scenery. We've still yet to hear any more on
this game, but given it's huge success in Japan (one of the
top selling Dreamcast games!) a sequel would be no
surprise.

< Did Robotnik Just Fart? >

A new system called "Ismell" created by Joel Bellenson and
Dexster Smith, has the ability to create virtual smells! It
sends out an odor from a can shaped system that plugs into
your games console. The Ismell system receives digital
signals from the game that your playing and transforms them
into a smell. The system includes a line of oils and other
compositions that mixes together to form the scent that
you're expecting to smell from your system. The system also
includes a built in fan to get the smells out into the air
so you can enjoy the sweet scent of your game.

As hard as it is to imagine the system is actually real,
and has been picked up by Eidos. Even so however, the mass
market appeal of this has to be questioned. Will we see, or
more likely, smell this add-on in the near future? Who
knows, but lets just hope there's a limit on what sort of
smells it can create :)

< Toy Racer >

As we move into the more recent September we can easily see
which rumors turned out to be true. After the recent ECTS
show, developers No Cliché were apparently working on a
sequel to Toy Commander. While this wasn't quite correct,
they were indeed working on a semi-sequel. Toy Racer, the
budget online driving game based on the Toy Commander
universe was released last month in Europe.

< Colin McRae Rally 2.0 Not Canned >

In contrast to the news of Codemasters scrapping all
Dreamcast development, including their hit racer Colin
McRae Rally 2.0, it seemed the game was perhaps just
delayed after all. As Codemasters worked hard to get the PC
version out before Christmas, the Dreamcast game was
rumored to have just been pushed aside and delayed until
next year, instead of being canned. However we've yet to
see any more on the game, and speaking of games that were
apparently brought back from the dead, what ever happened
to Castlevania?

< Soul Calibur 2 - Powered By Playstation 2 >

Could one of most anticipated sequels finally be announced?
With this rumor, we hoped it wasn't true was once. It was
suggested out of Japan that Soul Calibur 2 would instead
be powered by the Playstation 2 arcade board, over Sega's
Naomi. We hoped this would be cleared up at the upcoming
Tokyo Gameshow, but unfortunately nothing on Soul Calibur 2
was mentioned at all.

< Toejam & Earl 3 Online >

Everyone who has played the classic Genesis Toejam & Earl
games will know nothing can beat the two player team-play
it involves. Now with Sega.net complete and open, rumors
that Toejam & Earl 3 may be playable via the internet
surfaced to excited fans. We know for a fact that the
developers are interested in taking the game online, but
no details have been revealed to date on the title. We
shall have to sit tight and wait.

< Daytona Collection >

Being huge Daytona fans here at Dreamcast Weekly we were
buzzing with excitement with the rumors of an ultimate
Daytona USA collection on it's way. Including all of the
original tracks, those from Daytona CCE, and then even the
courses from Daytona USA 2, this was to be a gamers dream.
Apparently the entire staff of Sega Of America pushed for
this to be developed, and their cries had worked. Indeed
the game was in development as rumored here, albeit missing
the Daytona 2 tracks.

< Total Annihilation 2 - Sega Raises The Dead >

When Cavedog went two years ago, sadly their highly
anticipated sequel, Total Annihilation 2 went with them.
TA was one of the most popular real time strategy games the
PC ever saw, right up there with Command and Conquer. But
in mid September some interesting rumors came up that Sega
Of America had picked up the rights to the sequel, and was
going to release it on the Dreamcast. Sega no doubt has
plenty of surprise games up their sleeve for this year, but
wether TA2 is one of them remains a mystery. Nothing more
on this game has been heard since the rumors.

< Sonic Adventure 2 Release Date >

Even with the recent demo of Sonic Adventure 2 given away
in Japan, the actual release date for the game has never
been mentioned. Rumors suggested that even though Sonic
Team's plans for a worldwide release of Phantasy Star
Online had fallen through, they would try for one with
Sonic Adventure 2. As you may remember Sonic & Knuckles
had a worldwide release.

More recently rumors have come up of a possible January
2001 release for Sonic's next adventure, although until
Sega announce something themselves these will be nothing
more than rumors.

< And The Rest... >

And wether the rest of the red hot rumors over the past
three months are true are not will no doubt be seen this
year. Oh and what do we hear this week? Two sequels to
classic Sega games on their way? 3D versions of Shinobi and
Streets Of Rage? Perhaps a sequel to NiGHTS? We'll keep you
updated with all the latest, hottest rumors throughout
2001 (and try not to sound like a trashy tabloid magazine
while we're at it, heh).

>>>> Half Crazed in Pennsylvania

Q) I pre-ordered Half Life in August when the release date
was a laughing Sept 20. Since then it has been moved to
   October, November, December and now...January 1st?! I
realize that they are putting a lot of effort into
bringing the game to the Dreamcast, but when is it
really going to be released? - Shawn Bean

A) Ah, Half-Life...many a PC gamers soul was tortured as it
had its release date pushed back almost a full year by
the time it was released. Ironic that now the DC version
faces delays as well. Don't give up, be happy because
they actually seem to be working rather hard. I would
predict a late January or early February showing myself.

>>>> VGA Screen Shots

Q) I have been thinking of buying a VGA box for some time
now, but for screenshots. Is it possible to hit the
"Print Screen" button on the keyboard and take
screenshots of games through the VGA box? If not how
can I get screenshots of my own? Thanks. -Tipay

A) Sadly, it's not possible to just hit the print screen
button, because the screen isn't plugged into your
computer. It's plugged into the VGA box instead. Which
means that there is no way the shot could be stored on
your computer. There are ways of getting screenshots off
of the Dreamcast, but the only way I could think of is
if you had a video card with TV inputs on it.

>>>> Naomi 2 can Kick My Ass (and Tails too!)

Q) Hi there. Someone had a question about the 2001 arcade
games making their way to DC. What about Naomi2 games?
Now I know the Naomi board is just a tad beefier than
the DC hardware. However, the Naomi2 is supposedly
gonna make the original Naomi look like the Model3 made
the Sony 11 arcade hardware look. Any ideas how that
is going to translate? Thanks a bunch! - Patrick Geurs

A) Good point, but the games should still transfer very
well. The reason is that while the Naomi2 may be more
powerful then the Naomi it is still running on the basic
hardware as a Dreamcast. Model3 ports never worked well
because the hardware was so different in design then the
   Dreamcast.

>>>> Gundanium Armor Man to the Rescue

Q) Hey, what's up. On the rumored list of Arcade games the
title "Gundam" was listed. Now, I love stuff about
Gundam. Any chance of this game coming to Dreamcast?
Is this game being based on the anime series? Thanks.
   - Joel Dryden

A) I'm not really sure. I have heard things about an online
Gundam game, but it sounded like it would be the DC
game with an online battle mode. I certainly would hope
they would use the Gundam Wing anime as a background for
the game. However, if its giant robot fighting you are
aching for there is always Virtual On.

Keep the questions coming! - zondaro@usa.net
