Well being sent out on April 1st we thought this is finally
our chance to pull off a great April Fools joke. So here we
were ready with fake news items on new Panzer Dragoon and
NiGHTS games, and then guess what...
Sega go and announce Panzer Dragoon for real, and NiGHTS 2
is heavily rumored! It's too good to be true, but believe
it because these are no April fools. Sega has announced
full support for the X-Box, and wait until you see the
titles on their way. This is one exciting time to be a Sega
gamer! Jet Grind Radio Future, Sega GT2, and so many more
games!
Hence this issue our cover feature takes a look good look
at the X-Box and all the details you need to know. Then in
the news we've got Sega's announcements, followed by a huge
list of classic sequels rumoured to make a come back. Later
down in this issue, for all those gamers who still haven't
bought it, we have a review of Grandia 2 PAL version.
Then Ross is back with the Q&A, letters, and Phantasy Star
Online Clan, this week including a PSO Radio Show! But most
importantly is the launch of Ross's own magazine, Gamecube
Weekly. We certainly recommended signing up for it through
http://www.gamecubeweekly.com/ before the first issue goes
out.
Finally speaking of our magazines, this could be the last
text only issue of Sega World Weekly. Next week you may
well find the same good read, but enhanced with our brand
new HTML design.

<<.>> X-box eXposed!
-- Written by Graham Parker (who else could come up
with such a brilliant headline? ... </sarcasm> )
All of a sudden players of Panzer Dragoon, Jet Grind Radio,
and ten other Sega titles have something to look forward to
this fall, the Microsoft X-Box.
But while the official price and release date haven't been
announced yet, the specs are here, and the screens released
so far speak for themselves. The X-Box is no PC hiding in
console form, this is a power house of polygons, lighting
and speed. Certainly the most powerful gaming machine to
date.
So we don't have any doubts on the graphic side of things,
but as always it's the software that really counts and
until the E3 we won't seriously compare any titles to other
consoles such as the Gamecube. Hence this week we bring you
the specs, the information, the highlights and the worries
of this upcoming console. Then along the road to the E3
we'll do the same for each other machine, and help you
decide which is worth saving those pennies for.
Console: Microsoft X-Box
Release: Fall 2001 (rumored to be October 22nd)
Price: Rumored to be around $300
-- Features:
The X-Box has all the common features you'd expect from a
console, such as four controller ports, analogue buttons,
and a broadband modem. But it also comes with little
helpful features such as an auto-release on the ports. So
if you accidentally pull the controller too far, your
X-Box won't come crashing down off the shelf. Instead the
controller will pop-out of the machine, and leave you
breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Moving onto bigger things however, inside the console lies
a 10GB hard drive. Despite what gamers, and indeed us at
Sega World Weekly first worried about, the drive being
used for patches and the possibilities of your X-Box
catching a virus, Microsoft are ensuring developers use
this addition the right way. Data for the next level for
example, will be streamed off the DVD on to the machines
hard drive while you're still playing through the first
level. Thus resulting in very little or no loading times.
Then of course there's the ability to download new levels
and add-on's off the net. Just as Sega did a few times with
the Dreamcast, but was limited by the saving space of the
VMU. With the 10GB, you'll have plenty of room to save
games here, but you'll also have 8MB memory cards so you
can still show off those high scores at friends houses.
The last worry about the hard drive was if you'll be
required to install games first and the answer to that is
a solid no, never.
Along with the machines ease of development, using tools
which many developers are already familiar with for
example, Microsoft's $500 million in advertising money, it
seems the X-Box can do everything Sony can but better. But
like we originally thought about the Dreamcast and titles
powered by Windows CE, this ease of development might lead
to countless PC ports making their way to the X-Box.
Thankfully Microsoft and indeed the developers themselves
haven't taken that approach, and are instead making note of
the different style of games we like on consoles. As time
goes on too, the programmers will evolve beyond the already
set up libraries and tools for the X-Box, and then it's
power will really start to shine.
So overall at the beginning we wouldn't expect to be blown
away too much, but as the specs below show once programmers
get a grip on the machine, it certainly has the power and
potential to last many years. That after all is one of the
most important things when looking at which console to buy,
and hopefully Sega will help push the console further and
faster so we can get a better look at it's capabilities.
-- Main Concern:
Wether 3rd parties will give their full support to
Microsoft's first console. But then something like that was
probably said about the original Playstation six years ago.

<<.>> 11 X-Box titles from Sega!
This week Sega rolled out the support for Microsoft's
upcoming console, the X-Box. With at least 11 titles due
for release over the next twelve months, four games have
been revealed so far.
The first is a new sequel for Panzer Dragoon, one that is
all but confirmed to be taking the series back to it's
original shooting roots. Those who have played the original
three titles on the Saturn will know the world of Panzer
Dragoon is something very special, and certainly not
lacking in imagination or storyline.
The second title will have you pulling out those spray cans
again in a new Jet Grind Radio (Jet Set Radio) game. The
graphics were impressive enough on the Dreamcast, but on
the X-Box, one can only imagine at this stage. For the time
being the title will be known as "Jet Grind Radio Future".
Third up is another sequel, this time of the realistic
racer, Sega GT. Expect this to go head to head with Sony's
Gran Turismo on the PS2, and to fix all the problems people
had with the original. Sega has a hit in almost every
racing genre you could imagine, and now they are giving the
racing simulation a go.
Finally an original game due out for the Dreamcast has been
moved to the X-Box, the sci-fi action shooter Gunvalkyrie.
From Smilebit, this is a new style of shooting powered by
the cell-shading look from Jet Grind Radio. Anime has never
looked so good.
With four titles revealed right there, the other eight will
no doubt be coming soon, hopefully followed by in-game
footage at this years E3 show. In the mean time there's
some fairly strong rumors of just which games are coming
on the page below.
<<.>> Twin Galaxies Crowns Champions of Tony Hawk 2
After four months of skating, scoring and soaring, over 20
different video gaming competitors are taking home cash
prizes for high score accomplishments on Tony Hawk's Pro
Skater 2. Plus of course winners are going in the upcoming
commemorative edition of Twin Galaxies Official Video Game
& Pinball Book of World Records, the electronic gaming
industry's official book of records.
The five main cash prizes were $1,000 for 1st, $750 for
2nd, $500 for 3rd and 4th, then $250 for 5th. The THPS 2
Best Combo World Championship then issued twelve more cash
prizes of $150 each for the highest-scoring combos on each
of the three major platforms for the following four tracks:
Hangar, Philadelphia, Marseille and Skatestreet. The winner
of the $1,000 prize was Zabed Mahmood, 14, from Long Island
City, NY.
"Since the Best-Combo contest accepted scores achieved on
all three platforms, we were able to attract, without
exception, the biggest names in THPS playing, making this
a true world championship," explains Walter Day, Chief
Scorekeeper at the Twin Galaxies Intergalactic
Scoreboard.
To facilitate these contests, Twin Galaxies has a special
THPS Contest Center at http://www.twingalaxies.com

Next week: The return of the Import Questions? ... NO!
>>>> The Final Answer on Dragonball
Q) Will there ever be a Dragonball Z game for the DC? I've
been hearing rumors of a game in development. - ThaDocta
A) No...however, there MAY be a Dragonball game coming out
for the Gameboy Advance...shhh...don't tell anyone.
>>>> Release Date Ponderings
Q) When is Half-Life going to be released on the Dreamcast
in the UK? Thanks. - Matt Clarke
A) The Dreamcast version of Half-Life is close to being
finished and may be on store shelves "by late April
or early May." The delay may have come from the fact
that Gearbox Software is working on both the PS2 and DC
versions of the game. We all know how easy the PS2 is
to work on. However, the Blueshift extra set of levels
are no longer DC exclusive. They are now slated to also
hit the PC. Take that as you will.
>>>> Phantasy Star Offline
Q) I have been playing PSO online for some time now, but
recently my ISP changed the access number that I need
to dial to connect. When I try to go into PSO and
change the ISP settings it won't let me. I am stuck and
I can't play PSO online anymore. - Christoffer Heggelund
A) For some reason Sonic Team decided not to include a
menu to set up ISP settings. You will need to either
pop in the original browser disk that came with your
DC or one of the recent demo disks to change your ISP
settings.
>>>> Something For Nothing
Q) I read your great article about different free ISP's for
Americans. Any news about free ISP's for those of us in
the UK? Thanks. - Wilf
A) At this point in time I've given up trying to find a
free ISP for the Dreamcast. Most 'free' ISPs have shut
down because the AD market online is collapsing. There
is no money to be made. There are still a few left, but
most of those are in the USA. Besides, it looks like
the UK will not be getting too many more online games.
Sorry.
>>>> The Devil in Mrs.PAL
Q) My name is Julio, I'm from Argentina and I got my DC a
month ago in England. My TV supports PAL-N, PAL-M AND
NTSC, so when I saw it at &149 with 5 games in London,
I had to buy it. Little did I know about stupid PAL-I.
So now I'm playing Soul Calibur in black and white and
with no sound at all! What should I do? Would the scart
cable fix my sound problem? Thank you. - Julio
A) Importing Evil! See the trouble it causes. I don't know
about scart cables, but I have to wonder...what about
buying a VGA adaptor and playing on a PC monitor?
>>>> Games over Girls or Girls over Games?
Q) Is Bleemcast still coming, or is this the end? - Kenneth
Hutchins
A) They keep saying that its coming. They've refused to let
anyone see their progress. Rumors abound that its proven
a harder thing to program then originally planned.
>>>> Is it that time of the month already?
Q) Dear Sir, I love reading Sega World Weekly, and I was
just wondering: How do you think the DC stacks up
against Nintendo's Gamecube? Thank You. - Xmacro
A) As far as hardware goes? The Gamecube blows it away.
Games? I don't know yet. I'll be the first say that
Sega has had an unmatched series of hit games on the
Dreamcast. Nintendo is going to have to work hard to
match what Sega did in just one year. E3 will reveal
all.
Now with 10% more Alien probing! - zondaro@usa.net

<<.>> Grandia 2 PAL Review
- Written by Paulo Santos
The RPG fanatics that own a PAL Dreamcast console haven't
much reasons to be happy with the lack of quantity/quality
of RPGs available in Europe. So far, there are only 2 RPGs
available in stores. Ubi Soft's Evolution and Virgin's
Record of Lodoss War. While these aren't surely crap, they
aren't really epics RPGs.
But it seems that the PAL DC owners have even more reasons
to be happy. Ubi Soft finally releases the highly
anticipated Grandia 2 in the old continent and Sega's
awesome Skies of Arcadia is scheduled to be released mid
April. But for now, we have Grandia 2.
Developed by Game Arts, the same team responsible of the
highly popular Saturn/PSX RPG Grandia, this series are back
to a Sega console. Without a doubt, it's easy to say that
Grandia 2 is the best RPG available for Dreamcast by far.
If you are a fan of the genre, you shouldn't be wasting
time reading this review. Take off your butt from the chair
and run to your local store and buy it. You won't be
disappointed.
Grandia 2's history is pretty simple. The main character,
called Ryudo, is a warrior that wants to stop the growing
evil sources at all costs. In the middle, Ryudo has a girl
to save, and finds many heroes looking for a change to join
your army/party. All the characters are pretty cool, being
my favourites the falcon called Sky and the demoniac
Millena. Millena makes me remember Ryoko, from the popular
anime series known as Tenchi Muyo.
What makes Grandia 2 really special, is its awesome battle
system. As you make contact with an enemy, you are whisked
into battle mode. Here, your characters and the enemy are
spread across the three-dimensional battlefield, with the
initiative gauge displayed in the lower-right corner. The
gauge enables dynamic turn-based fighting allowing for
strategy. A symbol for each character moves from left to
right. When it reaches "COM," that character chooses a
weapon attack, critical attack, magic attack, item, special
ability, defense, retreat, and more. Depending on the
action chosen, the character symbol moves at an appropriate
pace toward the end of the gauge, "ACT," at which time the
action is executed.
If you are surprised by the enemy, you start at a
disadvantage as the enemy icons will all be a second away
from "COM" while your characters are still unprepared to
make their moves. When you decide to attack you can choose
a standard weapon attack, which has your character strike
the selected enemy twice (if the enemy is defeated by the
first strike, your character will turn to a second enemy to
finish - a great touch), or a critical attack which only
strikes once for less damage, but also pushes the enemy's
icon further back on the attack gauge!
The enemy you select for attack determines the speed at
which you can execute the command. For example, if you
choose an enemy on the far side of the battlefield, your
character must first run over before landing blows.
Sometimes the movement of characters will result in missed
strikes or unexecuted commands. Character status can also
be affected by items and enemy attacks. One cool example is
a boss that can render your characters indiscriminate
killers. This is represented, amusingly enough, by a swirl
symbol placed overhead. In such a state, the character
can't be controlled and simply attacks the nearest
character, including your team members!
Grandia 2's visuals make Dreamcast proud. The overall
visuals (textures, lighting, shadows) are in a word,
fantastic. The backgrounds are gorgeous as well. Grass,
mountainside, water, and even ice, are all rendered with
equal attention to detail. The characters also move
realistically with a full range of motion. Each character,
be it an enemy, hero, boss, or token townsperson, is highly
detailed. The towns are varied and beautiful, be it a
seafaring town or rundown, crumbled village. The spells are
awesome and unlikely games like Final Phantasy VIII, they
aren't too long neither too repetitive.
I was very impressed with the voice acting. It's really is
top notch. After Metal Gear Solid and Shenmue, I must say
that Grandia 2 has the best English voice acting I've ever
heard. The tunes/music are pretty good. Sound effects are
used well with different noises used for different strikes
during battle, as well as different battle cries for each
character. While travelling the countryside you will also
notice the subtle sound of footsteps on stone or grass.
The control and user interface are an absolute joy. Grandia
2 is very easy to navigate thanks to the use of button
icons and pointers on all menu screens. Actions in the
field of play are also clearly labelled with arrows
appearing when a ladder presents itself.
Grandia 2 is everything I and many DC PAL owners, have been
waiting for. A great RPG for one of my favourite systems
ever, the Sega Dreamcast. This is what RPG fans have been
(very patiently) waiting for. A must-own title that is
beautifully presented in terms of development, graphics,
and control. Any RPG fan would be insane to miss out on
this fantastic gameplay experience. Enough words, get
Grandia 2 now!

Lastability: 90%

>>>> Sega Gives Good Fun per Buck
I have a strange box sitting at home it's a small off white
thing, it has several peripherals coming out of it in
various designs all of which fit nicely into my hands and
never become uncomfortable. I have used it to while away
the hours playing happily alone or with friends. For £200
I think that my DC has given me far more entertainment
than either my DVD player or my VCR.
So I for one would like to thank Sega for producing it, for
supporting it and for proving that when it comes to it Sega
is the number one game and hardware producer. So for the
next year I for one will still support Sega and still play
my Dreamcast.
- Phil Tolhurst
>>>> Cowards and the Definition of Fun
I still think halting the production of DC is stupid. My
friend has a PS2 and there is nothing that compares to Jet
Grind Radio, Grandia II, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, or
Crazy Taxi. PS2 in the competition just seem to get old.
You have to wait so long for a good game like Metal Gear
Solid or Grand Turismo, and while waiting people are
renting DCs and playing Phantasy Star Online. Sega, you're
the most biggest coward in history of consoles.
