----------------------------------------------------------

Now this is a week to go down in HISTORY! The Sega Dreamcast
launched in America at last, to bring in almost $100 MILLION
on the first day, and smash all entertainment records world
wide!!!

Then we have THE most exciting, and very possibly true rumor
to date. How does Phantasy Star Online sound? Check out the
rumors section for the full details.

In the importing section we have MOD CHIP info just waiting
to be confirmed (photo confirmed)! Other features we have
a pile of the first US cheats. From the Generator Demo
Disc, to NFL Blitz 2000, Ready 2 Rumble, Hydro Thunder,
and more. Also for everyone that did notice, we missed the
final 50 answers to the trivia last week. They are
included in the features section today.

Finally, for Dreamcast Weekly, this is of course our 50th
issue, and now goes to over 21,000 Sega fans. As we expand,
I'm planning a surprise for DC Weekly to start within the
next few weeks. All I can tell you for now is that it's a
big step forward in the future of the magazine :)

Until next week then, Happy Gaming!

HOT QUOTE This Issue: "The Dreamcast went on sale around

-- American Dreamcast Launch 9/9/99

======| COVER STORY |=====================================
----------------------------------------------------------

>>>> SEGA DREAMCAST LAUNCH PARTY - AMERICA

>>>> Written By Toothfairy - rtreu@hotmail.com

Well, I did join the party in San Jose shortly after 8PM. I
thought I'd just stop by to see what's going on, and there was
plenty going on already! From Mobile Assault Tour trucks being
set up to two radio stations to quite a few reporters and an
already huge pre-sale waiting line, it was packed. Strolling
around for a couple of minutes, I get my butt kicked in Soul
Calibur, watch some kid completely rule R2R and people just
generally having fun - despite the repeated drizzle, chilly
temperatures and occasional thunder.

Back in the doofus-line, I chat with a couple of people of
people, including a mom with her 7-year old son who is almost
incontinent with impatience. :) Turns out he started reading
with video game trick sheets... Videogames! The way to a
literate America! :)

At around 9:30, Sonic shows up, and a little Indian kid hands
him a business card. Well, turns out it was indeed Suneet
(Webmaster of the Sonic Zone - one of our support sites - Tails),
busily promoting his online store. He's 60 bucks in debt and will
be put on a bread and water diet by his dad if he doesn't pay
him back by tonight, so make sure to stop by. End of
shameless plug. :)

At a quarter to ten, after some brushes with the local police
thug, beating myself that I forgot my camera at home and
some worried questioning of employees about whether there
will be enough systems to go around, I decided to get a
rechargeable camera. Gotta commemorate this moment
properly. :)

Of course, after a frantic 10 minute drive to the local safeway
and back, I had missed the entrance of Mini-me and that
blonde Beach-Bimbo from Baywatch (ha! top that
alliteration!). So I was forced to take pictures through the
window. Rats.

In the meantime, I had some fun with the local cameracrew
that was trying to do a live report on the frenzy. The crowd
behind the newswoman was rather civilized, nothing much
beyond some waving and yelling. So I decided to spice of the
show by starting to yell "Go Sega!" as loud as I could and
jumping up and down. Within 5 seconds of that, everybody was
doing the same; within 9 seconds, they were swarming the
woman; and within 11 seconds, the broadcast had to be
interrupted due to a complete breakdown of law and order. :)
Very fun. I didn't take a picture of it though. Rats again.

Somewhere along the line, the Dreamcast thief crowds through
my line, escorted by police. In a split-minute reflex, I manage a
shot of the back of her head. :) Finally, Mini-me and BBBB
saunter out of the store to head to the DC tent - it's autograph
time! This time, I get a great shot of them. Just to annoy BBBB,
I keep yelling "Go Mini-me!" I don't think anybody yelled ever
yelled "Go BBBB." Although one guy was trying to get her to
sign his Playboy collection with her on the cover. :)

Right before that, I did a little tape interview with a woman.
The usual clap-trap; I got to spell out my name, tell her that I
didn't get burned by the Saturn, what my favorites are, etc.
Nothing too fascinating. Deciding that I might as well find out
where I'll get my 2 lines of fame, I decided to ask what
newspaper she works for. Instead of a reply, she hands me a
business card. And right there, right in front of me, she starting
sprouting horns, her feet turned into hooves, her skin got a
decidedly reddish hue and there was the definite smell of sulfur
in the air. Name: "Moira Mouldoon." I cracked up. Hard. After
regaining some sort of composure, I explained to here that I
was one of the crowd of people who sent her some nasty
emails about her editorial at videogames.com. Promptly, she
switched on her little recorder and wanted to know why I would
do such a thing. Well, I explained to her that I was one of the
few (probably all from this bb) who tried to get some logic into
their reply. Her comment? "No one got the humor in it, the
irony, the sarcasm!" Ohh.... It was a satirical piece. Did anyone
else catch that? In any case, it was quite interesting. I even
have her picture. :)

Then, the grand moment finally came. The store opened! And
no, no 9/9/99 failure plagued their registers. The first guy in
line got the royal treatment (he had camped out since
YESTERDAY!), the guy after that got a princely treatment, and
after that it was back to business. Although it was a slightly
under whelming moment: I realized that in order for me to get
to the promised land, I would have to wait until the pre-sale
line was done. With my estimates hovering at around 450
people, I guessed about 4 hours of waiting time. How horribly
right I was. :)

After that, things decidedly calmed down. The celebrities left in
their limos, Sonic got tired, the other line crawled forward, and
I got cold, tired and hungry. The family with the seven year old
left, the other line still only crawled forward, and it seemed as
if more preorder people arrived after midnight to fill up the line
some more. Got some goodies by the store manager who
promised us that everything was alright, that we'd get NFL2K
on the big screen, and that she'd tell the other to go home. Of
course, none of it happened. So began the real wait. The wait
for the real fanatics.

And at about 4:45 AM, I walked out with my DC, an s-video
cable, a VMU, and NFL2K, Soul Calibur and Sonic. Hooray. I was
tired, I had to go to work at 9 (which turned into 10:30), and I
got lost on the way home.

All in all, it was worth it. In its own, twisted fashion, I enjoyed
the drudgery of waiting in the outcast line, fraternizing with my
fellow hopefuls, and watching the general crazyness that
surrounded the launch. Even the plumbing guy who showed up
at 4AM, asking what the line was all about and driving away in
disappointment after I told the DC was NOT going to be worth
more due to shortages (at least not for long) made it
worthwhile. Seeing people playing DC games in the rain on the
MAT game stations, people fighting over t-shirts (still in the
rain), taking pictures of random girls in order to finish my roll
(well, that's what I told them :) ), it all made for a memorable
night.

And all that for a game machine that I already have at a time
when I don't even have a TV to which I can hook it up to. Now
that's hardcore. :)

Random Thoughts:

It is a lot harder to be nasty to people in person. BBBBs
are just that. Mini-me is REALLY short. The Dreamcast
thief actually smiled back when I took her picture (for
the third time :) ). You can take pictures of anybody,
including the Infograme team there to promote PenPen.
People will do anything for a two dollar t-shirt or a 50
cent dog tag. Bring a chair next time. Being first in the
outcast line was more fun than being last in the reserved
line (which ran past dumpsters and porter-potties). And
I won't do it again. At least not until Sega's next system
shows up. :)

>>>> Sega Of America Makes $97M In First 24 Hours

Sega Dreamcast now holds the world record for biggest
entertainment sales in 24 hours. Making a huge $97M, way
to go Sega!!

The Dreamcast went on sale around 15,000 retail stores across
America, brining in $97,904,618.09 This revenue figure
shatters the previous record held by the movie Star Wars:
The Phantom Menace, which achieved $28 million its first
day in theaters back in May this year.

"Original projections were to sell 1 million consoles by
the end of the year and 1.5 million by March 31, 2000,
however, in light of the past 24 hours we are now
reevaluating these forecasts," said Chris Gilbert, senior
vice president of sales, Sega of America.

"We had recently announced an industry record of 300,000
pre-sales for North America, tripling the previous record
held by Sony for its North American PlayStation launch in
1995, but we didn't know the launch would be this big,"
continued Gilbert. "Our wildest expectations have been
exceeded and we believe this is only the beginning of a
phenomenally successful run for Sega Dreamcast."

>>>> Dave Perry Talks About Dreamcast

Core Magazine managed to track down Shiny Entertainment
president, Dave Perry this week. They interviewed him,
including a few questions about his thoughts on the Dreamcast.

CM: That sound wild (talking about Messiah), is there a
Dreamcast version in the works?

Perry: Yes, Messiah is coming to Dreamcast, but we still
have to finish talking to Sega about it. Everything was
going according to plan but ever since Bernie was fired,
we've been delayed. Now we're negotiating with Sega, but
the Dreamcast version is still a certainty.

CM: How close with the Dreamcast version be to the PC?

Perry: The Dreamcast version will be virtually identical
to the PC.

CM: We've heard about another serious contender you're
currently developing dubbed Sacrifice?

Perry: Yes Sacrifice is going to be a major deathmatch
net play game.

CM: That sounds prime for a Dreamcast translation as
well, any chance?

Perry: Hmm, I really shouldn't comment, but in
circumstances like these I should say if Messiah sells
well on the Dreamcast, Sacrifice would be a sure thing.

>>>> New Games Announced - Round Up

Here's the Dreamcast Weekly round up of the new games
announced for Dreamcast this week.

Hasbro Interactive will be publishing two new Dreamcast
games this fall, including Worms Armageddon and Centipede.
Worms Armageddon is the final in Team 17's hit series,
and will be released under the MicroProse brand.
Centipede, an update to the classic arcade game, will
be under the Atari brand.

Dave Perry confirmed Messiah in the news item above.

A Dreamcast version of Project's 2 PC game, Big Bang was
announced this week. The PC version is due out for Europe
in November 99, with the Dreamcast release lightly to be
early 2000. Described as a "3D space shoot'em up,
featuring some of the most amazing space battles ever
seen in a video-game. Big Bang puts the player at the
helm of a small fighter representing one of five races
fighting for survival, superiority and honor."

Fox announced support for the Dreamcast today with 3 brand
new games. The Dreamcast games will feature some of Fox's
best known franchises including: Croc, its original 3D
platform character; Planet of the Apes, a highly-
anticipated sci-fi action game; and World's Scariest Police
Chases: Deadly Pursuit (working title - and a long one at
that), a game based on the hit Fox TV show. The games are
set to launch in the second quarter 2000.

======[ RED HOT RUMORS ]==================================
----------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the rumors section of Dreamcast Weekly, each
week we'll keep you upto-date with the latest rumors going
around. Written by Tails.

>>>> Phantasy Star Online

Rumors this week have popped up about Sonic Teams 4th game.
Some sites are sure the game is going to be Nights 2, but
this is as equally exciting. Rumor has it they are
developing "Phantasy Star Online". On Sonic Teams web-
site infact, the logo of their 4th game is 3 circles
connected, suggesting a network game, and titled "PSO" -
standing for Phantasy Star Online? If true, this game
could know Shenmue off my most wanted! All will be revealed
later this month...
