With the beginning of online console gaming, the
announcement of Microsoft's X-Box, the release of the
Playstation 2, and the delay of Nintendo's Dolphin,
the gaming industry has had an interesting week to say
the least.

As for the console wars heating up, our cover feature
this week goes into depth to see what the Dreamcast is
facing, and is the Playstation 2 really all it was hyped
up to be?

The news page brings the full details of the Shenmue
translation to English. Also new details of the US browser
2.0, opening new possibilities to surfing of the web,
along with Australians finally getting their own browser.
There's good news for Americans, with World Series
Baseball 2001 on it's way, but over in Europe, several
key titles have been pushed back till later this year.

Finally fellow New Zealanders rejoice... Crazy Taxi
has made it to the shelves. With only 1,000 copies to
go around New Zealand at this stage however, you'll
have to be quick to pick up your copy.

Until next week then, Happy Gaming everyone!

P.S What do you think of our new headers, better, worse?

>>>> Heating Up The Console Wars

>>>> Written by Tails

Well this has been a fairly big past week... yes I finally
got Crazy Taxi. Oh and some other things happened too...
the Playstation 2 was launched in Japan, Nintendo's dolphin
was officially delayed (no surprises there, even Nintendo
fans have to admit) and Microsoft's entry into the console
market, X-Box was revealed.

So after all these events, what does the future look like
for the Dreamcast? It's time to take another look at the
Console Wars, only this time it isn't the "big three",
but four (No I'm not talking about Nuon, heh, don't make
me laugh).

Rumors and hype about the X-Box have been flying around
the net for the past 2 or so months. Before the machine
was confirmed this week, it was mentioned in press
releases from developers, and some of the features were
leaked out, having gamers eager for plenty more. We all
knew it was going to be big, and after what Sony did
with the original Playstation, a new comer to the
industry is nothing to under-estimate. But now we have
something to better judge the machine by, the official
specs, and the technical demo's.

First up, the tech demo's of Microsoft's X-Box are simply
jaw dropping. There's no other way of putting it. If the
difference between say the Dreamcast's first technical
demo's and Shenmue are repeated by the X-Box, every gamer
around the world is in for a huge shock! Quite weather
this quality can be reproduced in games does remain to
be seen, but according to developers the X-Box does
bring with it a leap forward in graphics.

Now just by looking at the X-Box's specs, you can see
in a glance this isn't a video gaming console... it's
a monster! While that's all well and good, what may
easily be the most powerful console on the market must
come at a cost. How Microsoft are going to release it at
a competitive price against the Dreamcast as they have
said I don't know. By it's release date I would expect
Sega's console to be $150 or less, and it may well slip
under the X-Box as a cheap mass market machine. This
maybe in a different league to the Dreamcast, which
as I've said before may open a fare chance for both to
succeed at once, rather than cutting into each others
sales.

STOP PRESS: Just as I was going to send this off, I
found out Microsoft are saying the X-Box can produce 300
million polygons a second without effects, or 100 million
with effects. Oh dear oh dear... specs like this have
just become a joke. It's PR companies saying, "Well our
machine can do 66 million polygons a second". Then
another saying, "Well ours can do 100 million. Nah nah!"
"We're announcing the Playstation 3, which can do 150
trillion billion gazillion polygons a second!!" Oh dear.

However recent rumors have suggested while Microsoft may
have the power, getting the games might be another matter
all together. This is where Microsoft may have turned to
Sega for help. But since this is just rumors at the
moment, we'll leave this topic open for now (so come
tomorrow the news of a Sega & Microsoft deal is
announced... doh!) If Sega do help however, it could
put an interesting spin on the war.

Even if Sega isn't involved, they do have plenty of time
to sort something out to fight back at Microsoft's
advertising onslaught (they have more than $300 million
to spend on just advertising). But finally, yes until
more details such as price and games are announced,
the X-Box simply can't be compared to the Dreamcast
in the way Playstation 2 can today.

Sony has gone a long way to hype up the Playstation 2,
and why not, it's Sony's largest product ever. Being
powered by a "revolutionary" emotion engine, and
having at least 20 times the power of Sega's console,
Sony's PR department had gamers around the world hanging
off their every word.

But now the console has launched, what's the reality?
Is it a revolution? Well no, it's more of the same to
be honest. Sequels of Ridge Racer, Street Fighter and
many other Playstation titles are order of the day. Now
while there are some original titles in the launch
line-up, is there anything that couldn't be done in
the past, that uses the revolutionary emotion engine?

Well it can play DVD movies... no we're talking about
games, and besides the DVD Drive comes brings with it
a much higher price tag. It has bigger memory cards...
no, the games just take up that much more space on the
cards (which really I do find strange!). Well how about
the analog buttons? A nice touch, but reviews so far
say they now have to push too hard on their
controllers (Videogamespot.com for one, which we all
know certainly aren't biased against Sony).

Then with just 2 controller ports, the same basic
design of controller, no online gaming till 2001, and
without anything to compete with the VMU, perhaps Sony
is taking the "if it's not broken don't fix it" train
of thought a little too far.

As far as the superior graphics go too, Sony fans are
having to eat their own words as no one can say they
are 20 times better than those on Dreamcast. The
difference between the two consoles in the battle
of pretty pictures at least has yet to be won. Even I
for one was expecting a little harder of a punch from
Sony.

The Dreamcast and Sega's games such as Chu Chu Rocket
and Crazy Taxi are a real breath of fresh air, and will
hopefully hold their own against Sony. It just seems
Sega has worked hard to build their next generation
console, where Sony have spent most of their time in
the marketing.

Which plan will pay off the best remains to be seen, but
for those who believe the Playstation 2 will wipe Sega
clean off the board, they should take a good hard look
at what differences the Dreamcast and Playstation 2
again.

Now finally, we come to Nintendo's Dolphin. Once upon a
time the console was due out late this year, however after
long enough being the joke release date of the industry,
Nintendo have confirmed it's delay till the fall of 2001.

Being released a year after the Playstation 2, and 2 years
after the Dreamcast has it's advantages though. The Dolphin
will almost certainly out perform both graphics wise. Then
if Nintendo can get the software out to match, and most
importantly keep the hits rolling out, which has been
their downfall with the N64, they will be a serious
contender for this generation.

If Nintendo doesn't have the games though... they will
be facing the X-Box in an all out spec war. Which unless
Nintendo improves what we know about the Dolphin so far,
they will fall short on.

As far as crushing Sega's share of the market goes however,
I believe Nintendo has some big changes to go though if
they want to come out on top. For starters they need to
widen their target audience. Even though the N64 has some
great games for teen / adults, the company is fast getting
a reputation for children's games. By 2001, when going to
buy a console for their kids, parents will more than
lightly see the Dreamcast as a much cheaper option.

Now after writing this feature of Sega's competition, I
don't believe any console is a sure fire winner. Last
month some may have said Playstation 2, but I hope those
now realize it isn't the console from heaven Sony hyped
it up to be.

With not two but three other consoles to compete with,
every company will have to fight to survive. The shelves
of your local games store will become a battle ground for
space and attention. Missing out on a hot new 3rd party
title that gets converted to one or two of the other
systems will be a bigger blow than ever before. Can 4
different consoles really hang in there? It's going to
be an exciting era, and here's hoping Sega separates
themselves from the others by becoming the cheap mass
market machine.

 (((  THE WEEKLY NEWS  )))          - www.primagames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>>>> Shenmue Translation
This weekend during the GDC, Yu Suzuki himself revealed
the English version of Shenmue for the first time. DC.IGN
had the first scoop today.
Sega has auditioned 200 voice actors for the game, (possibly
setting some sort of record?), but to ensure a high quality,
Yu Suzuki himself decided who makes it in. The actors were
found in New York, all of which Suzuki believes are better
than their Japanese counterparts.
That has to be good news for worried people like me that
we'll end up with more Sonic Adventure style dubbing.
Only two scenes from the game were shown unfortunately,
but no doubt Shenmue will be one of Sega's prime titles
at the E3.
>>>> World Series Baseball 2001
After Football, Basketball, and Hockey, comes another
American favorite... Baseball. Coming this May Sega Of
America are due to release World Series Baseball 2001.
The game features 5 different modes, including All Star,
Playoff, Exhibition, Home Run Derby and Pennant Race.
Each game can be played in one of 28 different parks,
with any of the major league teams.
>>>> Australia Goes Online Today
As of Monday March the 13th, Australian's with a Dreamcast
can finally make use of their modem. Using their Dreamkey
disc packed with 150 free hours (to be used in the first
3 months), Dreamcast owners will be able to send and
receive e-mail and browse the World Wide Web.
"The Dreamcast Internet service has been designed to offer
the consumer 'plug and play' Internet access at an extremely
affordable price," said Steve O'Leary, Dreamcast
Communications Manager. "Thanks to Mr. Koichiro Sugie of
Sega, producer of this browser system, we were able to
realise this network system on Dreamcast. This ability
to access the Internet is something that no other videogame
console offers as a standard feature now, or in the near
future."
Comma.com.au is the Australia Internet portal, which
Michele Bell, Dreamcast Business Manager talks about.
"Comma.com.au, which has been developed by OziSoft as
the portal for Dreamcast owners, provides both Dreamcast
and PC users a unique corner of the World Wide Web
which, through their own directions and requests will
cater to their every need and desire. Be it specific
e-tailers our users would like to shop with, their
favorite television/movie program schedules at the click
of a button, or the latest game information from all
corners of the globe, Comma will deliver and all this
through their television or PC."
>>>> Download VMU Cartoons
This week Planetweb, makers of the browser shipped with
all US Dreamcast's, added a new function to their web
portal. Users can preview and download custom animations
directly to their VMU from a selection of over 60 (and
growing) with the click of a button.
Another VMU development has been the ability to write
code on a webpage, that displays text or graphics on
the users VMU.
Both these add new functions to the Internet that
are un-avaiable through a PC. Ok you might say "Duh"
now, but this is what Planetweb needs to do if they
want people to surf the net through the Dreamcast
over a PC.
>>>> New Planetweb 2.0 Browser Details
The next version of Planetweb's Dreamcast Browser
is well on it's way, and a bundle of new features have
been confirmed.
Starting with MP3 capabilities, you'll be able to
listen to songs over the internet, and then in the
near future download them to your VMU.
Next is Flash animation, which while has been
over-done on some websites, can certainly enhance
the surfing experience if used correctly.
Crazytaxi.com is a great example of a Flash website.
Use of the rumble pack has come up, which could be
activated using special code added to a webpage.
However you have to think, after the novelty has
worn off, why would you want your controller to
vibrate while surfing the net? (keeping your minds
out of the gutter here)
Javascript was brought up, but it's been confirmed
we'll have to wait a little longer than 2.0 for
that.
Ken Soohoo, co-founder and CEO of Planetweb commented,
"We have brought advanced Internet functions such as
more efficient browsing, parental control, email, chat,
secure socket layer (SSL) for e-commerce, and easy-to-use
navigation to Sega Dreamcast since its introduction.
With this upgrade, web developers will have the
opportunity to bring more creative Internet content to
Sega Dreamcast, while gamers will be able to take
advantage of even more interactive elements available
on the Internet."
Peter Moore, Senior VP of Marketing at Sega said, "As
Sega moves forward into a critical year, we are looking
for products and services that will provide Sega
Dreamcast Network consumers with as much value-add as
possible. The improvements made to the Planetweb browser,
including the addition of MP3 compatibility, will enable
us to take gaming to the next level. The complete
Internet gaming experience is right around the corner
and Sega is the only company that will bring it to the
gaming community."
>>>> European Delays
Many PAL titles have received delays this week. First up
is Chu Chu Rocket, being pushed all the way back to May
12th. Then comes another title that was due out next month,
Ecco The Dolphin. Ecco has been given a "summer 2000"
date.
Metropolis: SR is next up, to 7th June 2000, but given
the latest screens and movies from this game, this is one
title we don't want Sega to rush.
Finally comes Zombie Revenge, which is coming on the 23rd
of June... yes 5 months after the US release. Why? Well
Sega Of Europe hasn't given a reason yet, but we're
hoping for plenty of juicy extras!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Welcome to the rumors section of Dreamcast Weekly, each
week we'll keep you up to-date with the latest rumors going
around.

>>>> Model 2 Emulator?

Rumors of a Model 2 emulator have surfaced during the
week, which began on Sega Of Japan's message boards.
The message boards have gotten a reputation for starting
rumors, but also for deleting those which aren't true.
At the moment at least, the rumor is still on the page.

If it pans out to be true, the possibility's are nothing
short of exciting, even though Model 2 games are showing
their age graphics wise.

Imagine racing hits such as Daytona USA, Sega Rally, and
Manx TT all on 1 GD-ROM. Then a fighters collection
filled with Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, and
Last Bronx. Here's hoping!

>>>> Virtua Cop 2 Movies

Wondering how Virtua Cop 2 on the Dreamcast finished up?
NextGenVideo's have posted 3 movies, one from each of
the normal stages online now. But also of particular
interest to me was their review...

http://www.nextgenvideos.com/reviews/dc-vcop2.htm

While the game only runs at 30 frames per second, unlike
the arcade (and I have to ask... why?), they seem to
like it, and asked Saturn owners of Virtua Cop 2 what
they thought too.

>>>> Lik-Sang Update

O Pre-Order Dead Or Alive 2:

Yes if you like out side of the States, you can now pre-
order the US version of Dead Or Alive 2. The release
date is this Friday in fact, which seems sooner than I
thought.

>>>> VMU: The Battery Draining Monster ?!?

Q) How long do VMU batteries last? I ask this because my
   VMU batteries ran out last week after I had had the
   thing for only 2 months! I hadn't played VMU mini games
   much (twice through Chao adventure) before they ran out,
   it was a PAL VMU (definitely not Japanese) that was
   bought as soon as they arrived in New Zealand. - Rohan

A) It should last longer than 2 months, however not too
   much more. A few hints for saving power is pulling your
   VMU out of the controller when you turn off your
   Dreamcast, and pressing Sleep. It would go to sleep
   by it's self normally, but it does take a little while.

   Aside from that I'm not sure what to tell you though,
   until Sega come out with a better VMU you'll have to
   replace the batteries every few months. My advice
   is to buy them from a supermarket such as Countdown
   however, not from a place like Dick Smith Electronics.
   Countdown charges half of the price of DS for them.

>>>> Do I Lose My Saved Games?

Q) Hey I was wondering with the vmu if the battery goes
   flat do u loose your files or is the battery just for
   the game boy side of it? - Nick

A) No all your saved games are stored on a special type
   of memory, Flash RAM, which doesn't require power.
   Your saves will be fine, but you need battery's to
   play mini games yes.

>>>> Dead Or Alive 2, Nights 2, and More...

Q) 1. How does the PlayStation 2 version of Dead or Alive 2
   compare to that of the Dreamcast and what's the problem
   with releasing the game in Japan?

   2. When will Innocent Tears be released in Europe?

   3. Is there any plan to upgrade the Dreamcast's graphical
   capabilities to Playstation 2 standard?

   4. I've read in certain articles that Nights 2 is coming
   to Dreamcast and in others that it's not. What's the
   word? - Jose

A) 1. The characters in the PS2 version are made up of
   more polygons, however there are less lighting effects,
   and some detail in the background missing.

   2. No word on it yet.

   3. The Playstation 2 graphics really aren't all that
   better, hence no upgrade planed so far... although
   one is possible in the future if required. The upgrade
   would more than lightly be a memory pack ala Nintendo's
   upgrade.

   4. Sonic Team are afraid if the game is anything less
   than perfect people will be disappointed. So I wouldn't
   expect to hear anything solid on Nights 2 until it's
   deep into development.

>>>> Making Your Own VMU Games

Q) I was wondering if you can tell me what development
   platform is needed to develop games for the VMU? And
   or do you know of any where that I might find
   information on programming the VMU? - Dave

A) Sega Of America are going to release the development
   kits over the net in the near future. Until then
   there are other, but more complex ways of bringing out
   your own VMU games. http://www.booyaka.com is the
   best source for development information on the net.

>>>> What Else To Do With The Light Gun?

Q) Apart from Virtua Cop 2, is there any more light gun
   games on the way, such as Time Crisis 2, Jurassic Park
   etc? - Dave

A) Take The Bullet is a UK game that uses the light gun
   including the D-Pad behind the trigger. The game is
   a first person shooter with up to 4 players split
   screen, or 8 people over the net. Unfortunately we
   don't have a release date yet, but we'll keep you
   updated.
