 (((  EDITORS COMMENTS  )))  - http://www.PrimaGames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These days we review less games, instead choosing to
focus on features / editorials and previews. But then again
some games are just too big to pass up. So as this weeks
cover feature Mike Bess reviews Dead Or Alive 2, Tecmo's
fighter that (dare I say it?) may even put Soul Calibur
to shame. Find out on page 1.
Then there's big news as another console is announced
(just after I do my feature on the console wars, typical),
along with a delay for Tony Hawk Skate boarding, and 3
new titles coming to the US.
Many of our readers have helped create this issue. From
sending in details on how to unlock the secret web
browser in Chu Chu Rocket, to sending us your experience
with importer Lik-Sang. Also a few more changes have
happened this week, including moving some of our regular
pages around.
Finally can I ask if you enjoy reading this magazine and
have time to surf a little around the net, that you give
http://www.primagames.com a visit, as they do a top job
supporting Dreamcast Weekly. Until next week then,
(when we take a look at the games that deserve, but never
have received a sequel) Happy Gaming everyone!
 (((  COVER STORY  )))       - http://www.PrimaGames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

>>>> Dead Or Alive 2 Review

>>>> Written by Mike Bess

Those voluptuous vixens have arrived. Packing their deadly
arsenal of martial arts combat and bodies painted in a
beautiful 128-bits. Tecmo hasn't done much to redefine
the fighting category, but it has done a great deal in
revealing what Dreamcast is capable of generating. It takes
the genre to a new plateau visually, and provides many
hours of fresh gaming goodness.

Sega fans cheered when Tecmo announced DOA2 would be
produced on the Naomi. It guaranteed a Dreamcast conversion
that would be smooth and rather painless. In that
transition from arcade to home, Dead or Alive 2 preforms
marvelously. The graphics, sound, and control have been
preserved and the inclusion of the extra modes are but
added cream. So, if you played the arcade version and
loved it, stop reading immediately, head to your local EB,
and buy it. For the rest of us, let's get dirty.

Fighting locales in Dead or Alive 2 are made up of
different elevations and added dangers. It expands on
Virtua Fighter 3's style which ushered in the era of
real fighting zones, rather than the bland mats of
before. With Dead or Alive 2 gamers will find themselves
battling it out in cathedrals, across Chinese castles,
over the frozen tundra and agorgeous Japanese garden.
That's only half the story though, all together DOA2
has eight (sue me if I mis-counted) stages all pushing
Dreamcast and putting Soul Calibur to shame.

The twelve combatants follow suit. Despite their...
ahem... frontal appendages, sex appeal is not the only
thing going for the cast. Their skin textures have been
generated nicely and the motion capture flows smoothly.
Sometimes matters can get a little jerky, but over all,
the fighters perform their attacks and their shows of
pain in true Dreamcast-fashion. Their out-fits also
react to the environments. For those more perverted
readers in the audience (you know who you are!) walk
one of the girls over to an open vent and up! goes
their skirts. Along with that, hair, tassles, and any
other wavey fabric flutters very realistically in the
breeze. Thankfully, none of the men are wearing any kilts.

Another positive aspect is that Dead or Alive 2's boss,
Bankotsubo the Evil Tengu, does not take a page from
Capcom's cast of villains. Which means he's actually
beatable! Unfortunately, he's a little too beatable in
any difficulty rating other than "Very Hard." Which
brings us to the game's chief vice.

Veteran fighters will dispatch Dead or Alive 2 much too
quickly. In "Normal" mode I sent the enemies packing in
fifteen minutes on my first playthrough. Unlike most
fighters, Tecmo has opted for a one round per match
standard. To make matters worse, you can't add any more
rounds in the options section. Even on its hardest
setting, Dead or Alive 2 can be endured quickly. Despite
the fact that Bankotsubo may be making your butt into a
broom head, the intensity of a third round tie-break has
been killed. Its sudden death with every match, which
means some can last as little as twenty seconds if
you're talented.

Thankfully, during Versus Mode, gamers can choose up to
five match points. So, while Tecmo confusingly dropped
multiple rounds from their Tag and Story modes, at
least when you have your buddies over, prolonged exposure
to pain is available.

Tecmo managed to redeem this fiasco in the form of the
Tag Match. Pretty much the same as Namco Tekken Tag
Tournament; four characters on two opposing teams go
at it. Dual-combos can be performed, and your ally not
in combat is able to heal and return the match stronger
than before. Plus, oh man! you've got to see it when
one of those teams busts out a duo-attack; talk about
high "ouch" factor for the opponents. This one section
does tremendous good for the title, providing lots of
lastability and challenge.

Please do not kill me for the following statement. Dead
or Alive 2 has managed to blend the gameplay of Virtua
Fighter and Tekken deliciously. Present are the
graceful attacks and reversals; the hallmark of AM2's
classic. Multiplied by some serious "ouch" moves and
juggling in Tag Mode, tipping a hat to Tekken's
dynasty. I had expected something which went one way
or the other, but Dead or Alive 2 provides both.
Newbies will be able to get into the groove of the
game without too many bruises, while the hardcore can
crank the amps with all the combat choices, reversals,
blocks, and sheerly blissful attacks. Its a shame the
game didn't include network support, otherwise, my head
would have exploded. The mess would have been horrendous
with all my anime toys littering the desk.

So, all the time that Tecmo was spending on the looks,
maybe they cut some corners with the sound? Wrong! All
those little grunts, and "hayahs" are recorded crisply.
Fist and kick attacks have also received close
attention from the developers. Here's the best part
though, which will make every Japanophile, yours truly
included, very happy. All the dialog is recorded in
Japanese, and with real voice-actors, not just the
lobby temps! Yes folks, there is actually some emphasis,
sincerity, and earnestness in the script! I knew you
would be happy.

An added touch comes in the manual. Unlike all the other
handbooks for the US games, Tecmo has not robbed us of
the color-filled pages every Japanese boy and girl revel
in. The entire manual for Dead or Alive 2, every single
page, has been provided in high-quality color. Gone are
the drab gray shades. Its color, and it rocks.

Most of us came into Dead or Alive 2 with high expectations.
Tecmo has met our hopes, despite a few rough edges along
the way. The sex appeal, its blended gameplay, and
stunning graphics combine into one hell of game. Rarely
do I invoke hell in my reviews, but Dead or Alive 2
calls for it with flaming consonants! Its going to be
a while before a game can surpass this one. So you
better hurry to your local EB, all the DOA2 arcade vets
are already in line. Good fight and good night!

>>>> New Linux Based Console

If you thought the console market was getting crowded
now Microsoft have stepped in, there's still more to come!
The Indrema L600 is a new linux based console just
revealed this week. Indrema, the company behind the new
hardware are hailing this as the first real set-top box,
due for launch sometime this year.

The console is PC based ala the X-Box, yet comparing the
2 is impossible at this stage as we wait for further
specs to be announced. To date however, these have been
confirmed...

600 MHz Processor
64 MB Fast Memory
2/8/30/50 GB Hard Drive Option
Integrated Mozilla Browser and E-mail
Quake 3 Arena/Unreal Tournament
MP3/VOB Storage and Playback System
Built-in Infrared Sensor
Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Option

100 Mbps Ethernet Port
1 Composite Video In, 1 Out
1 S-Video In, 1 Out
1 Component HD or SVGA Out
1 Stereo In, 1 Out (L/R)
1 Digital Audio Out (Optical)
4 USB Universal Ports

Special "DV Linux" Distribution
Supports Mesa 3D, DRI and OpenStream(tm)
Massive 3D HW Acceleration (GPU TBA)
MPEG2 Dual Stream HW Acceleration
HDTV Output Supports 480p, 720p, 1080i
3D Audio Converts to Optical Out
Integrated Personal TV System

Another powerful sounding box, although now with 5
(6 if you count Nuon) consoles all racing for a share of
the video gaming pie, it's not so much what's inside that
counts, but the line-up of titles you have. Will the
Indrema L600 attract the big developers? No doubt we'll
have a better idea after the E3 show this May.

>>>> Tony Hawk Falls Behind

Tony Hawk Skate boarding has been pushed back just 2 weeks
before it's planned US release. The game is now due out
at the end of May, and while no reasons were given, we
can safely guess Crave are still fine tuning the game for
running on your Dreamcast console.

>>>> Buffy Summers Coming To Your Place!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is hitting home this fall,
due for release on the Dreamcast, PC, and Playstation.
All of the scenes from the hit TV show will be re-created
through each machines polygon pushing power. Sunnydale
High School, the cemetery, the town square, the shopping
mall, the Bronze nightclub, and Buffy's home will all
feature in the game, along with further locations around
Sunnydale.

From the screens revealed so far the game is already
looking hot, in particular the special effects of watching
a vampire go Woosh as Buffy does her thing.

How the game plays however remains to be seen. But if
it's not unlike Soul Reaver and not at all like Fighting
Force 2, I can't wait to get my hands on Buffy Summers :)

>>>> Namco's Next Title CONFIRMED

So after the perfection that was Soul Calibur for the
Dreamcast, what's next for Namco? The rumors have been
running hot since last year, with titles like "Time
Crisis 2", "Ridge Racer", and even "Tekken" tipped to
be on their way.

But what about Mr. Driller? The cute 2D puzzler currently
making it's way to the Playstation. Not exactly what I
had in mind myself. However after the success that is Chu
Chu Rocket, I can't help but get a little excited over Mr.
Driller. We'll keep you updated on how this title is
coming along.

>>>> Evolution 2 This Summer

Ubisoft have confirmed Evolution 2: Far Off Promise is
up for a US release this summer. The game is not all too
different from the original, although naturally follows
a new story, and has improved graphics. If you liked
the original, this is one to watch, if not, it's no
doubt an RPG worth renting.

>>>> Dino Crisis Port

Given the ease of PC - Dreamcast ports, and after the
announcement that Dino Crisis is coming soon to home
computers, a DC conversion is naturally going to be
rumored. Capcom have no comment on the subject yet,
however it is safe to say the chances of a port have
increased quite a bit. We'll keep you updated.

>>>> Windows CE

Q) 1. Is there any way I can get a faster modem?

   2. And what dose "Compatible with windows CE" mean?

   3. And how do I boot windows CE and do stuff on it?
   - Taqiyy Saleem

A) 1. Sega are releasing an Ethernet Adapter during
      the 4th quarter of this year. The adapter will
      allow you to use any Cable / LAN / DSL connection
      with your Dreamcast. We'll have more details in
      May.

   2. Games can use Windows CE (stored on the CD) to
      run. It means the Dreamcast can read PC code in
      a way.

   3. No you can't run Windows CE, it just runs in the
      background of some titles.

>>>> Where's All The Platform Games?

Q) Is there any news about new platform games coming to
   the dreamcast? - Philip

A) Good question, it's a big change from the Platform
   heavily 16-bit era that's for sure. Rayman 2 should be
   hitting the shelves soon, but aside from that I haven't
   seen any news on more Platformers coming to the US
   yet. Don't forget to look out for news on Sonic
   Adventure 2 later this year however.

>>>> Using American Accessories In France

Q) Can we use the American accessories like paddles or
   VMU on the french Dreamcast? - Nakou

A) Yes, VMU's from each region all work fine in other
   places of the world. I'm not sure what the paddles
   are though?

>>>> Shenmue, Shenmue, Shenmue!?

Q) Shen Mue? Shen Mue? Shen Mue? When does that came out
   in US and Europe?! Before Christmas? - Zuck

A) Yes, the game is due out before Christmas for all
   regions around the world. A fall 2000 date has been
   given for the US, with Europe and Australia getting it
   in November / December I imagine. Expect there to be
   a delay between US and European versions as Sega work
   on a top quality PAL conversion.

>>>> Spike Out DC

Q) Have you heard anything on Spike(Out) for the DC? I had
   read an article on it being released in the Arcades and
   then on the DC, but I never even saw it in the arcades,
   but I've heard that the original and a sequel were
   released in Japan. (In case you've never heard of it, it
   was a fighting game from Sega that used a Gang or Team
   concept and multiple cabinets could be connected for
   group fighting.) Thanks. - Shane McWilliams

A) I read it was in development a while ago (a long while
   ago) too, but haven't heard anything since then. There
   hasn't been a sequel yet, announced for the arcades nor
   the Dreamcast. Outtriggers has a similar cabinet design
   to Spike Out, but is vastly different in game play.
   That's the only game I can think of that might have been
   mis-took for a sequel.

For Power Stone 2 MP3's, the list of titles appearing
at the Tokyo Game Show, what Sega says about a DVD
add-on, and more NextGenVideo's have the news this week.

Ok that really sounded like a blatant advert. But why are
they featured in Dreamcast Weekly? Because the movies are
quite possibly of the highest quality on the net, that's
why. If you haven't checked them out yet, now's a good
time to start.

>>>> Lik-Sang Update

O One Happy Reader:

Phil from over in the UK sent us a letter about Lik-Sang
this week, hoping to spread the news of their excellent
service.

"Many thanks to you and the rest of the Lik-Sang team, I
now have a "multi-region" Dreamcast. The chip arrived this
morning, and including stripping the DC down took about
20 mins to install. One nervous power on and it worked
fine on my PAL games (relief), then a quick visit to my
local software shop (to try one of his Japanese imports)
and here's another happy customer for Lik-Sang. Best
regards, Phil."

Thanks Phil, this is the reason we talk about Lik-Sang
each week.

O DC replacement case

For US$24 you can get a replacement case for your Dreamcast.
They are available in the following colors: clear blue,
clear, clear yellow, and smoke (I have clear blue myself).

Lik-Sang don't pay Dreamcast Weekly in exchange for writing
about them each week, after the great feedback we've had
for our readers about them, we just believe they are the
best importer on the web.
