This weeks issue is filled with plenty to read! (Which
would actually imply other issues aren't... hmmmm....)
But anyway, yes there's an interview with Luxoflux, the
developers behind Vigilante 8: Second Offense, along with
a hardware review on the "DC Double Power" unit. Which
amongst other things allows you to create your own VMU
icons.

Then there's news on an MP3 Playing VMU (but also bad
news on a Dead Or Alive 2 delay), rumors that Metropolis: SR
is going online (yes online!), cheats for the newest RPG
"Time Stalkers", and of course Question & Answers, along
with the latest Strategy Guides from Prima Publishing.

Finally our website has received a little face-lift,
and amongst other things if your looking for past issues,
that's the place to be.

Until next time then, Happy Gaming and remember...

The Game Is Never Over!

>>>> Luxoflux Interview

>>>> Written by David Warner

THE COMPANY:

Peter, can you tell us what you do at Luxoflux, and what
it was like starting the company back in 1997?

It was very exciting. After several years at Sega, Adrian
Stephens (currently the president of Luxoflux and lead
programmer) and myself were ready to take the leap. We
signed up with Activision to convert their PC property
"Interstate '76" to the PSX. What started as a quick
6-month port eventually turned into a lot more -- twelve
months later we had "Vigilante 8" on our hands and were
five people strong.

Where did you come up with the company name, Luxoflux?

A popular question! The company was originally called
'Alpha Channel' but we had to drop that name due to
another multimedia company of the same name already in
existence. Since we've found it very difficult to invent
a name which was both descriptive, cool and not yet
registered, we decided to simply focus on finding a
truly unique name instead. We liked some of the retro
names such as 'Electrolux' and so, after some
brainstorming, 'Luxoflux' emerged on top of our list --
the name, from Latin, implies light-flow. Believe it or
not, the name was still available for registration! :)

Where did you work previously and which titles did you
work on in the past?

I was first involved with some early Genesis games at
Sega i.e. Sonic The Hedgehog II. My first full design
credit was on Sonic Spinball for the Genesis.
Following that, Adrian and myself created an original
title for Sega called Comix Zone and later we spent a
year prototyping what was a super-secret Sonic the
Hedgehog 3D game for the Sega Saturn. Unfortunately,
the game never materialized due to Saturn's commercial
failure.

How many people currently work at Luxoflux?

We were up to ten people during the peak of V8:SO
development. There are eight people here now. We're
anticipating a minor expansion when production begins
on our yet-to-be-announced next-generation title.

Were most of the people in the company involved in
developing V8:SO?

All but one. We've also worked with some contractors,
mainly in the areas of music, sound and hi-res model
creation (for the purposes of cinematics).

VIGILANTE 8: SECOND OFFENSE:

What improvements/additions does V8SO have over it's
prequel?

There are multiple improvements in both technology and
features. At its core however, V8:SO remains true to
its roots -- the basic gameplay principles are the
same. Nonetheless, we've added support for water,
added polygon subdivision (PSX) and implemented some
nifty vehicle enhancement and upgrability features.
There is a whopping 18 all-new vehicles to chose from,
each of which can be upgraded to a new chassis by
collecting salvage points from destroyed enemies.

V8SO is your first game on the Dreamcast. What was it
like working on Sega's new system?

While I wasn't the programmer directly implementing
the DC version, my perception is that it was both
exciting and frustrating. The frustrations were
mainly caused by Sega's constantly evolving libraries.
Certainly, the boost in framerate and graphics quality
alone were worth the effort.

Are there any limitations or problems which you would
have like improved in the console?

Full hardware spec up front would've been nice. The
Dreamcast is clearly a huge step-up from the
ill-conceived Saturn, unfortunately by the time PS-2
and X-Box hit the shelves, its technology will be
considered inferior.

What are the systems strengths?

It has some nice graphic effects supported in hardware
e.g. volume shadows and bump-mapping. We weren't able
to implement those effects on V8:SO, but are hoping to
showcase them in our currently developed DC title.

The intro in V8:SO is very impressive and grabs peoples
attention fairly quickly. How much planning and work
went into the intro?

Since the cinematics on the first V8 were done
externally, we wanted to attempt producing our own
cinematics in-house for V8:SO. With the intro I really
wanted to set up the story, as opposed taking the
common approach -- creating some generic action-packed
montage. We've decided against voice-over, so the
challenge was to tell a story using only visuals and
within a limited amount of time. Considering we had
only two full-time artists produce over 10 minutes of
CG video (including all ending movies), we are quite
happy with the end result.

When you were developing this game did you ever consider
including online gameplay?

Yes, unfortunately Sega's Shinobi/Kamui libraries did
not support it. Though it has been announced, we are
yet to see proper implementation of online play from Sega.

The 4 player split screen mode is quite a lot of fun. Was
it hard getting the 4 separate windows working fast enough
in such an open environment?

According to Cary Hara, our DC programmer, the game has
been optimized from the get go to support 4 player
split-screen. For instance, the entire terrain renderer
was written 100% in assembly language. Initially, there
were some problems with the definition of arbitrary
screen boundaries -- credit goes to Sega for working
closely with Cary on modifying their viewport API, to
allow us to implement the split screen mode properly.

Was there anything that you had to leave out of the game
due to deadlines?

Absolutely nothing! (kidding)

How do you think that V8:SO has been received by the
press and public alike?

The press has been quite positive -- we've received some
great reviews (see our website links), plus one or two
not-so-hot ones, as usually happens.

Has the game met your expectations sales wise in America?

The game is selling well, especially considering we've had
some incredible competition from established franchises
and new big-name games.

THE FUTURE:

Do you have any plans for another V8 game yet or are
Luxoflux looking at moving in another direction for
game development?

We are currently working with Activision on another
vehicular combat game based on an exciting license, due
out this Christmas. I think we're done with V8 for
awhile, although I wouldn't mind taking it into another
direction at some point. As a next step for Luxoflux,
I'd like to see us expand into another genre.
Nonetheless, Activision owns the rights to V8, so they
might decide to have another V8 game developed elsewhere.

Will you develop your future titles on the Dreamcast?

Our current title in development is slated to be
released on both PSX and DC, although final negotiations
regarding the DC version between Activision and the
Licensor are still ongoing, so keep your fingers
crossed.

Have you had a look yet at the Playstation 2, Dolphin or
recently announced X-Box?

Yes, we have some PS-2 kits and have been recently
presented with X-Box specs -- both quite impressive.
We haven't had much time to experiment with the kits,
but it is safe to say we will be moving to these
next-generation consoles as soon as our current title
is complete.

PERSONAL:

What are your thoughts on violence on video games? Do
you object to games such as GTA or Kingpin?

I feel that most of the media and government censorship
is undue. I also believe that video games are a fine way
to have fun and release some aggression in a harmless
way. I don't like GTA as a game, but I found Kingpin
amusing and well done. I have a 9-month old boy now and
although he is still too young to play, I agree that
children are impressionable and without proper guidance
they can be easily influenced by video games or movies
or what have you -- but the answer certainly isn't simply
banning violent games. Nonetheless, I take conscious
steps NOT to have direct portrayal of human death or
even blood in our own games, especially when you can
do without it.

What is you favourite food?

Definitely sushi!!!

Thank you very much for you time....

 (((  THE WEEKLY NEWS  )))   - http://www.PrimaGames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>>>> Dead Or Alive 2 UK & Australia Delay
Acclaim have confirmed that the PAL version of Dead Or
Alive 2 has been delayed until April 28th.
The english version will include a full screen 60Hz mode,
but also secret characters. Now before you get your hopes
up though (probably too late), there aren't any new
characters. In the US version all of the players were
open straight away, where as in the PAL game you'll have
to earn the extra fighters.
>>>> MP3 Playing VMU Revealed!
Sega's MP3 Playing VMU was finally shown to the pubic at
the Tokyo Game Show. Since then further specs have been
released, including possible pricing and storage space.
The card will cost around US$100, which is a shock to
the system. But the good news is that it holds 64MB of
music, and if you shop around for any other portable MP3
player, you'll see Sega is giving us quite the bargin here.
The VMU is still small enough to fit in your pocket, and
comes with a headphone port on the side. All fairly
impressive, although I'm personally waiting to see what
powers this unit. Here's hoping for a re-chargeable
battery that powers up through the Dreamcast.
>>>> Power Stone 2 Details
New details about Capcom's highly awaited sequel came out
of Japan this week. Most people know the title can be
played by up to 4 people, but over the Internet? In Japan
at least. Here's hoping the game will keep it's Internet
modes for the English release later this year, but we'll
keep you updated.
As the number of fighters increases, so does the number
of gems. 7 different Power Stones now appear around each
level, while you still just have to pick up 3 stones.
Which would allow multiple super characters on screen
at once.
Finally you'll be able to transfer data between the arcade
and home games using your VMU. Although this feature is
highly unlikely to make it out of Japan.
>>>> Not Aloud A Dog? Get A Poo-chi!
Sega's Furby-Style electronic dog has just been released
in Japan to 100,000 eager new pet owners. It isn't the
first virtual dog on the market, but it is the cheapest...
by a long shot! Retailing in the US later this month
for just $30, Sony's version comes in at 10 times that
much.
So their are some functions missing, but it does
everything you'd want to do but fetch the morning paper.
It plays games with you, sings when it's happy, along
with other modes not unlike a Furby. For example two
Poo-chi's together will talk to each other.
As I mentioned before, the dog is coming out in the US
later this month, thanks to Tiger Electronics.
>>>> Classic Games Are Just A Download Away
This month marks the beginning of Sega of Japan's new
classic gaming service. People will be able to download
one of fifty Mega Drive (Genesis) titles onto the
Dreamcast. Then a further 50 games will be added during
the months of May & June, followed by 15 each month
beyond that.
Pricing details hasn't been given yet, nor any comment
on this service coming to America. But we'll keep you
updated.
Welcome to the rumors section of Dreamcast Weekly, each
week we'll keep you up to-date with the latest rumors going
around.
>>>> Metropolis: SR Vs Phantasy Star Online
Your probably thinking, what on earth could those two
titles have in common? Well this weeks rumors would have
you believe the games aren't too different at all.
Phantasy Star Online is getting a worldwide release, and
full online play. Now Metropolis SR is rumored to have
exactly the same. Can you imagine racing someone across
the world in one of many real cities from around the
world? Mind blowing! But a fast paced racing title like
this would be ruined with too much lag, so just how Sega
would get around that problem by Metropolis's release
date remains a mystery at present.
If the rumor turns out to be true, we'll have the news for
you in a future issue.
To ask questions, please click Reply to this message, only
be SURE to include "Q&A" some where in the Subject. We
regret we're unable to personally reply to each e-mail,
but the best questions will be selected weekly and printed
here.
>>>> My Dream-PC
Q) This is a question you may be able to answer, will the
   Sega Dreamcast ever come out with a printer?
   - "Airforce1"
A) Perhaps, although it's more lightly the Dreamcast
   Browser will be made to work with PC printers, and
   there will be a cable to connect your Dreamcast to
   a printer that way.
>>>> Someone With An Itching Trigger Finger
Q) 1. What kind of security is built into the browser's if
      I purchase online with my Dreamcast?
   2. When are we going to see more gun games released?
      I'm tired of House of the Dead 2.
   3. Will we see a conversion of Jurassic Park, seems like
      a no brainier. The game been in the arcade for a while.
   - Joe Ng
A) 1. Not having the browser here myself in New Zealand
      I'm not sure, but can one of our readers help?
   2. At the moment the only other gun game on it's way
      is "Take The Bullet" (to be re-named). A first
      person shooter.
   3. Sega don't seem to like the idea of converting older
      arcade games. Virtua Cop 2 aside, since that was a
      port of the PC version. But if Sega's listening,
      I've had lots of requests for Jurassic Park, and I
      would love to see Scud Race (Super GT) come home.
>>>> How About Another Resident Evil eh Capcom?
Q) I have a question and a suggestion and I hope you will
   answer both of them. Firstly Is Resident Evil Zero
   Planned for release on the Dreamcast or will it come
   out only on the lame N64 and are any other Resident
   Evil's going to come out on the Dreamcast? Also it
   would be great if you would deliver pictures attached
   with the Dreamcast Weekly Newsletter so how about it?
   -Plant42
A) RE: Code Veronica isn't even out in most of the world,
   and you want another Resident Evil? So do I actually.
   But there isn't any word from Capcom yet. If you live
   in Europe however, Resident Evil 2 is on it's way. A
   little old but still a good game never the less.
   In the future I hope to produce an HTML version of
   the magazine yes.
>>>> Yes I Do Get This Question All The Time...
Q) I know you get this question a lot but just one more time!
   Will games bought from European countries such as Hungary
   be compatible with my Australian PAL Dreamcast? And are
   there any differences at all between them? Thanks for the
   time. - Andy
A) Nope there are no differences between the games, and
   you shouldn't have any trouble running them.
 (((  CHEATS  )))            - http://www.PrimaGames.com -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

>>>> Time Stalkers

O Clone Monsters:

This trick will allow you to clone a monster to give to a
friend's game/save file, while keeping the original monster.

#1. Make sure you are in the town area and your current
    character has the "Moon Lighter" or "Moon Lighter S"
    item with him/her.
#2. Save your game at Sword's House and walk to the VMU
    machine in the Monster House.
#3. Download the "Moon Lighter" or "Moon Lighter S" mini-game
    onto your VMU.
#4. Download the monster you wish to clone onto the VMU.
#5. After it has finished downloading, exit the Monster
    House. WITHOUT SAVING, turn the game off.
#6. Turn the game on and select your friend's save file. Go
    to the Monster House and load the monster from the VMU
    into the game. If done correctly, both save files should
    have a copy of the same monster!

- Submitted by Scotty Hoag

O Keep Downloaded Mini-Games / Free Mini-Games:

When you buy one of the super expensive mini-game items,
you can only use it once! However, there is a way to keep
them. First, download the game onto your VMU. Then, WITHOUT
SAVING, turn the game off. If done correctly, you should have
the mini game on your VMU, and still have the item in the
game! NOTE: If you did not save when you bought the mini-game
item, you will keep the money you used to pay for it with,
making it free! The game will be on your VMU either way!
- Submitted by Scotty Hoag

O Lots of cash or Tokens:

Before you do this make sure you have a vmu mini-game that
stores tokens on your vmu. Now save your game a Sword's
house. Than go to the nearest shop and sell all of your
items. (sell legendary items to the rabbit guy). Than go
to the monster house and buy as many tokens as you can and
put them on your vmu. Now turn the system off and reload
your save. You will have all of your stuff back but still
have the tokens on your vmu. Do this as many times as you
want and either sell the tokens for cash or trade them for
good Items. - Submitted by Aron

>>>> Lik-Sang Update

O DC Double Power Review!

Most people have heard of the Nexus memory cards. Their
colorful designs, high storage space, and no use of
compression. I have them myself, and use them to download
save files and mini-games off the net, along with putting
back-ups of my files onto computer.

But they are limiting in that they have no screen. A few
weeks ago Lik-Sang posted a new product from the people
behind the Nexus cards called "DC Double Power". The box
has two VMU slots, and allows you copy data between any
memory cards (not just their own), and most importantly
those files that the Dreamcast won't let you copy. Making
a clone of your Chao is just one example of a file it
lets you copy.

When the unit arrived I was surprised how small it is.
The design looks like a very small Dreamcast console,
although it has different ports. A VMU port on either
side, and places on the back to plug the unit in, along
with plugging it into your computer. To upload/download
files through your computer however, you'll need the Nexus
'Memory Card To Computer' cord. It would be a bit annoying
for those who don't own one of their memory cards, as the
cord certainly unlocks most of the units power.

Using the cord you can e-mail saved files to friends,
download mini-games off the Internet, archive your files
on a hard drive, and create your own VMU icons. Originally
I thought it was a bit unless that their aren't any
instructions on how to build your own pictures. But a
quick trip to their website revealed easy guides to doing
everything with the unit: http://www.hkems.com/help/help.htm
Anyone can create their own icons using "Paint", the
program which comes free with Windows.

Finally another nice feature of the Double Power unit is
a battery slot. You can insert 4 AAA batteries into the
bottom, and use it as a portable saves exchange drive.

At US$20 this is a great purchase for any Sega fanatic
(who can resist creating their own VMU pictures?), but
for the casual gamer your probably better spending the
money on their memory cards.

http://www.Lik-Sang.com

Lik-Sang don't pay Dreamcast Weekly in exchange for writing
about them each week, after the great feedback we've had
for our readers about them, we just believe they are the
best importer on the web.

>>>> Four Dead Or Alive 2 Movies!

If you haven't seen Dead Or Alive 2 yet (where have you
been?), NextGenVideo's have 4 brand new hi-quality
movies ready for downloading. Also their weekly news
includes "MP3 player in a VMS", "Genesis/Megadrive games
on DC", and more.

http://www.NextGenVideos.com

Why are they featured in Dreamcast Weekly? Because the
movies are quite possibly of the highest quality on the
net, that's why. If you haven't checked them out yet,
now's a good time to start.
