((( EDITORS COMMENTS ))) - http://www.PrimaGames.com -

Greetings from Madcow Productions. At the risk of sounding
really sad, that's the name of my small movie company.
During this week I'm making a small movie here, a horror
comedy story. And yes there is a point to mentioning this,
it means this week I'll have almost no time to spend on
e-mail. Sorry about this, but I won't be able to reply
to many, if any e-mails during the week.
But anyway, on to this issue... a review of the
newest Dreamcast RPG, Time Stalkers is our cover
feature. An important review for those starved RPG
fans to read before they buy.
Also if you don't have a Dreamcast keyboard, we
feature an adapter that lets you plug in PC keyboards
& Joysticks. For the full details check out the "Into
The Web" page.
In the rumors Bizarre posts job openings for network
programmers. Adding to the burning hot rumors of
Metropolis SR featuring online play.
And just finally, a note to those fans of Sega 2000,
the site is re-opening this Monday :)
Until next time then, Happy Gaming and remember...
The Game Is Never Over!

>>>> Time Stalkers Review
>>>> Written by Mike Bess - http://www.segadreamcast.net
I love role-playing games. Any RPG on any system will get
my attention. Besides Survival Horror, its that one genre
which breaks my fanboy barrier. Some of the best of these
games are coming to Dreamcast. Eternal Arcadia, Phantasy
Star Online, Napple Tree, El Dorado, and Grandia II just
make me want to glaze over with sheer delight. So, it goes
without saying that Time Stalkers made a massive impression
on my gaming radar. The game even came stamped with Sega's
blessing; I was very excited.
Sometimes perception does not always live up to reality.
Actually, make that most of the time; and unfortunately
the same thing has happened to Time Stalkers. What I
expected to be a rock-solid "look at me now!" role-playing
game for Dreamcast became nothing but lackluster hash.
What has been billed as a consummate gaming experience
has turned out to be a crash course in digital disaster.
As not to be tossed to the fan-boy hounds, I'll quickly
touch on some of the game's positive qualities. Besides
making a fantastic coaster, I like the Time Stalkers battle
system. Maybe not as complex as some other games, it
provides a straight-forward easy to understand fight. Up to
four good guys and bad guys can face-off in each dance of
death. Duelers take their position on two sets of four
squares and hit it off with whatever ferocity turn-based
attacks can muster. Menus are easy to understand so there's
never any of that "What the heck does this do?" trouble with
the various commands.
Enemies can also be seen before they attack. Unexpected
random battles annoy me beyond end. Don't get me wrong, I
love fighting and building my experience. What the serious
pain is... you're walking around, just about to make it to
your destination and BAM! the screen swirls around and the
battle music fires up. Thankfully, none of that happens.
Instead we can see when one of those cheap-o, poorly rendered
demons from the bowels of hell start waddling our way. And
believe me, that's scary enough!
Then comes that great slap in the face. When Time Stalkers
grabs us by the collar, shakes us around a bit and spits on
us. Then, in classic Ryo Hazuki fashion, flips us over onto
the ground with a quick kick in the ribs while we're down,
wondering what just happened. Yes friends, things get very
nasty here on out.
The graphics of Time Stalkers wouldn't be so bad if the
animations had been better. Yet, even the hero, Sword, walks
with a very stiff posture. What causes this? Low polygon
count, and after playing games like Shenmue... I've been
rather spoiled. Visually, Time Stalkers is just a cut above
an N64 running with an expansion pak. Which isn't saying
much, when the DC is vastly improved upon Nintendo's design.
Sting really showed off some nice graphics with its work
on Evolution and (yet to hit America) Evolution 2. Both
games are packed with vibrant, high-resolution colors;
great textures and a smooth frame-rate. Even though the
series is rather simple, and never digs deep like an epic
RPG, its a lot of fun. Kind of the Saturday morning cartoon
equivalent to a Grandia masterpiece. Which definitely is
not a swipe against Evolution fans, but there's an obvious
difference.
So, where does Time Stalkers fit into this equation? Time
Stalkers is more like the RPG equivalent of that really
crappy Godzilla remake. It fails to set much precedence in
the visual department. Various spells and moves are
unforgivably simple. Very few combos, initially, will
cause us to "wow" at the eye-candy. Which is a terrible
shame. And its only all doomed further by the dungeons.
One of the big selling points of Time Stalkers was that
levels were all random. The shape of dungeons would
change every time you re-entered them. Oh it all sounds
well and good. The whole gimmick was billed as "limitless"
replayability. Instead, what is actually provided is a very
shallow gaming experience. Where dungeons all look alike
except for a few texture changes.
It actually feels more like a mouse in a maze, than a
brave explorer checking an area out. Furthermore, what
fun is there when something unique rarely pops up? When
all we are given are generic corridors, regenerated and
recycled over and over on a notion that "randomness"
equals fun? Randomizing an RPG is not the secret formula
to an epic experience. That comes with the story and
also building your character's experience points. From
a once vulnerable trabadour to a truly fierce warrior or
a devastating magician.
Well, Climax Entertainment had other intentions, it
seems. Whenever Sword exits a dungeon all the experience
points he received in the zone are given up! The whole
idea of points building are put to a quick, quiet death
in Time Stalkers. The whole incentive of creating this
scandalously powerful character to lay the smack-down
on enemies is dis-regarded. Instead, each time you go
into one of these randomized dungeons you're back to
square one. That first level of experience, when you're
vulnerable to attack and must stay rather determined to
move up through the ranks.
And don't think for a second you'll want to stay in these
dungeons for a while either. There is really nothing to
explore. Whether its the tower where we enter the game,
or a lava pit after we are delivered to the new world...
all the "dungeons" look very similar. To make matters
worse, everything's rather uniform, the textures are
awful, and enemies laughable. These creatures that look
like a cross between an Ewok and Gizmo are supposed to
be some of our most hated enemies. What they look like
are a bookish bunch of weenies following us around looking
for a spanking!!
The dialogue and story also seem to be too many parts
of Time Stalkers that are "randomly generated." Sword
is introduced to the story en route to some destination.
His attitude is rather cocky, which only become more
magnified as the game progresses. A flashback occurs,
and then he's attacked by what looks like a sumo-robot.
They fight, cheesy threats our exchanged and our big,
burly bad guy runs off to this looming, Dracula-ish
tower ahead.
Yet it only spirals downward. When Sword makes it out
of the tower he's introduced to this mysterious new
world. A place made up of small, floating islands. It
sounds spectacular, but in execution, just looks like
an easy way of explaining why all those bizarre locales
are so close together.
An old man greets our cocky hero, and goes into the
dribble of "our world is in danger" and that Sword
is the only one who can "stop the darkness." Nothing
very original. Except, our friend Sword is even more
cocky and arrogant than what the usual RPG formula
plot calls for. I suspect that the writers hoped to
make him cute by endowing him with such an attitude.
A personality where (insert most RPG titles) he cares
little for himself or those around him, and fights
only to hide some deep-seeded guilt. What could that
guilt and the memories that haunt him be? Well, you'll
just have to by the game to find out!
And if you do buy the game, and can struggle through
the cheesy predictable dialogue-- you're a stronger
person than myself. I found it an almost constant
stumbling block dealing with any of the characters.
Sword's personal servant Mutton, and also the locals.
Whenever you talk with some of the townfolks its that
usual discussion you find in RPGs. They've either
come from some other land hoping to fullfill their
dreams... or about to head out and well... try and
fullfill their dreams.
Has Time Stalkers made me cynical? No that happened
long ago, with modern American literatures, and its
all a story in itself. I still love role-playing
games and the features of being able to experience
such an epic genre. Even if the stories follow a
formula, then so do many popular novels. Most Japanese
studios and even some of their American counter-parts
can create role-playing experiences with fantastic
character development. After playing with that certain
spikey-haird, big-sword weilding hero, we're all just
a little more attached to them for it. And yes, I did
get all teary eyed at the end of Lunar: Silver Star
Story.
Climax Entertainment just tries to do what all of the
other great RPG studios have done in the past. And it
does, technically, follow that story formula. Except,
where the others managed to create games which were
able to break that pre-conceived mold, Climax has not.
Where Game Arts blew us away with Grandia and Lunar,
Climax has failed to go. It could be either through
incompetence or a rushed development cycle. Whatever
the reason, the heights of personal struggle present
in some of the greatest and most famous role-playing
games is not present in Time Stalkers. Instead, we've
got this cookie-cutter Legend of Legaia feel where the
game's sitting in a rocking chair three decades from now
saying "I coulda bin a contenda."
All of this can be forgiven though. The most desperate
role-players on Dreamcast could probably mine some
fun-nuggets out of this game. Except for the little fact
the developers forgot to mention. That being Time
Stalkers has some horrendously sloppy programing. Okay,
maybe its not programing, I usually glaze over when I
see code of any sort. But I do know that when a character
"glides" over steps he should be walked down, there's a
problem. Or the fact that a waterfall is flowing upward
in the wrong direction-- and there's no explanation of
a "thousand year old curse" to reason it away.
Which would mean that there are some physics problems
that shouldn't be present in Time Stalkers. About the
stairs, or any varying elevations for that matter.
Whereas in most games the character places their foot,
one after the other, on each step and walks down, that
doesn't happen with Time Stalkers. Instead, they glide
down on this invisible surface. It looks absolutely
laughable, and something 32-bit systems should be worried
about, not the state-of-the-art in home entertainment.
Heck, even character's in Playstation games are made to
properly walk up and down flights of steps or across
hills. Just throw all that out the window when you come
to Time Stalkers.
The opening cinematics and soundtrack were actually
quite pleasant and foreboding. Originally, I had
thought we had a winner till the game progressed. Yet,
even the sound and music ultimately go the way of the
dinosaurs. Good ideas are just extinct from the whole
concept of Time Stalkers, revealing very serious flaws
through-out the whole of the experience.
Time Stalkers has come upon North America with a great
deal of hype. Actually enough build up, it probably
could've sunk the Titanic. And that's exactly what
happened. Before our very eyes the game has slipped
under rough waves. Troubles brought on by a lack of
good design ideas, and ultimately poor execution.
Climax Entertainment has created a role-playing game
which departs too much from the genre. And in what it
tries to emulate from past great experiences, is executed
very poorly. Building your character and enjoying a great
story are integral to this genre. In Time Stalkers they
are but two more stumbling blocks for a rather bumbling
design.

>>>> A Worldwide Party... For Worms
Worms Armageddon was to be the final title in the popular
series from Team 17. But as the Dreamcast enters the world
of online gaming late this year, an online Worms game was
simply too hard to resist.
Worms World Party is due out during the 4th quarter of
2000 for both the Dreamcast and PC. Players from all over
the world can join in your game, with almost no lag (slow
down). The game supports up to six players on each team
which can be made up of any number from your home, and any
number off the internet.
As with all the previous sequels there will be new weapons,
new game modes, and plenty of new missions. Then the
Dreamcast version will feature enhancements over the PC
title, including better graphics and control amongst other
things.
Worms is a vastly different game from Quake 3 Arena, also
due out later this year for the Dreamcast, yet both will
almost certainly be the best mutliplayer titles you can
get. Bring on the 4th quarter.
The game also includes...
Fantastic new game-play modes for this edition including
WORMPOT (allows players access to over 400 different
game-styles), Fortress, Bully, Goliath modes.
Over 40 multiplayer missions, all of which can be played
online. Multiplayer Death-Match, including "Boss" levels
New Night-Fight & Super-Rope games
World Location Maps - see where your opponent lives in
the world! Hugely expanded training modes - hone those
worming skills!
Worms Weapon Library - earn tips from the top!
All-new tournament mode.
VMU sub-games and online ranking support.
"WORMNET" for Dreamcast (similar to existing Wormnet for
PC players)
User definable gravestones, flags, team configurations
& much more.
>>>> Sega 2000 Re-Opens Monday 17th

see next month.
The job pages of a company can often be a great place to

>>>> Dreamcast Internet Security
Last week we got a question on the security of the DC
browser, but not having the software here in New Zealand
yet, I couldn't answer. Thankfully one of our readers
sent in an e-mail to explain all...
I've used my Planetweb browser to purchase online since
October of last year. I purchase videogames and anime
online with my Dreamcast. The Planetweb browser has
something called SSL Protection. That stands for Secured
Sockets Layering. That way your transfer of personal
info is encrypted when you make online purchases.
I enjoy purchasing online with my DC. It's been great and
I've had no problems at all. I hope that helps to answer
your question. That is if this answer even get's posted.
Hopefully it will. -Anthony B. (ShinTEK*)
>>>> My Baby VMU Needs A Change
Q) When I switch on my DC I get a high pitched tone for a
few secs (about 5 or Is it trying to tell me something,
eg new batteries for VM (already?) or did it always do
this and I didn't notice until now with all the excitement
of owning it. - Philster "Shinobi_d" D
A) Yes the VM is in need of a battery change. Aside from
the high pitched tone though, it will work fine in your
Dreamcast console without batteries.
>>>> Oops!!
Q) This may seem like a stupid question but in the following
quote from your newsletter, it says "pubic"...
>>>> MP3 Playing VMU Revealed!
Sega's MP3 Playing VMU was finally shown to the **pubic**

I have added **'s to point it out easier. Why is that
there?? Don't say it's a spelling error, I believe
there's more to it than that!! :) - John
