>>>> E3 2000 Wrap-Up

So now the E3's over for another year (but what a show!), how are things
looking for Sega, and what about Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft? Well it
seems almost every gaming site agree's Sega ruled the show. Sony's booth
was rather boring (and totally quiet), Nintendo's was as expected, with
no sign of the Dolphin or GBA... and Microsoft didn't have anything new
to show for the X-Box. Sega however had around 90 games on display, live
stage shows for Space Channel 5, and really had the cool attitude other
companies lacked. Looks like Sony really missed their chance to out
shine Sega on the year of their new console. Don't we all feel so sorry
for them? heh.

But seriously, the games are what everyone wanted to see, and games are
what Sega had! Quake 3: Arena, NFL 2K1, Sonic Adventure 2, Jet Grind
Radio, Space Channel 5, Samba De Amigo were just a few on show. This E3
2000 Wrap-up will let you in on what Sega's booth looked like, links to
impressions for games around the net, and of course news that came out
of the worlds biggest Videogaming expo.

>>>> NEWS

O Broadband Internet:

Sega.com is partnering with 2Wire, the leading developer of residential
gateway products that integrate DSL and home networking. 2Wire's
HomePortal residential gateway will enable SegaNet to expand its
broadband capabilities. HomePortal will bring the benefits of broadband
access to Dreamcast users.

By connecting with the HomePortal, gamers can easily convert their
Dreamcast systems into super-fast broadband Internet devices with up to
twenty times the speed of dialup services, using the Dreamcast console's
modular Ethernet port, which will be available later this year. -
Thanks to Dan at Primagames for the news.

O Dolby Surround Sound:

Support for Dolby Surround will be included in the next version of
Dreamcast operating system, Version r11, which should release this June.
The Dolby Surround release libraries, which will accompany Version r11,
will support up to eight channels of real-time positioning. - Thanks to
Dan at Primagames for the news.

O DVD:

Yes the Dreamcast DVD Player was on show, but not quite in the form it
had been rumored as. The DVD Player is is about the same size as a
normal player, only half the height and with an orange top. The design
was very simple, and is likely just a early mock-up. But how does it
attach to the Dreamcast? It quite possibly doesn't. Instead the player
has a Dreamcast built-in, and can run all your GD-ROM's. No price or
release date were given, but as many people had hoped, it's at least
good to know it's coming in one way or another.

O Moonwalking On Your Dreamcast:

Michael Jackson's 2nd appearance on the Dreamcast (also in Space
Channel 5) was revealed at the E3. What looks to be a Michael Jackson
on beef-cake, along with Saquille O'Neal will star in Midway's Ready 2
Rumble: Round 2. "Midway is thrilled to have Michael Jackson join the
all-star cast of 'Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2,'" said Helene
Sheeler, vice president of marketing, Midway Games. "Players can now
'float like a butterfly, sting like a bee and moonwalk like Michael
Jackson' as they experience the larger-than-life boxing action of
'Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2!'"

Michael Jackson has been recorded and motion captured so what you see
on screen, aside a little tougher, is actually the man himself. Ready
2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 is due out in November.

O Price Drop:

While it's not a price drop in the retail fashion, Sega will be giving
Dreamcast gamers a US$50 rebate ($100 for Canada), and a free month of
Internet use on Sega/Net. Between June 4th and August 31st 2000 you
can call this number: 800/688-8460, and sign up to Sega/Net. Callers
are given the choice of having a free month, or signing up for 2 years
and being mailed a full $200 rebate.

O Sega/Net Titles:

Here is a full list of the titles you could be playing online via
Sega/Net from this September, including Half Life.

4x4 Evolution
Alien Front
Black & White
Bomber Man DC
Game Room
Half Life
Kiss Psycho Circus
Magic The Gathering
NBA 2K1
NFL 2K1
P.B.A Tour Bowling
Phantasy Star Online
POD 2
Quake III: Arena
Railroad Tycoon 2
Worms Party

O Shenmue Release Date:

Last but certainly not least in the E3 news, is the release date for Yu
Suzuki's masterpiece, Shenmue. The game is due out in the states on
November 14th, which gives enough time to hopefully get a PAL version
out and in stores before Christmas. Finally the 4th disc, the Shenmue
Passport has been confirmed to be part of the games western release,
allowing you access the world ranking over the net, new downloads, and
information about each character and location around the game.

>>>> THE E3 BOOTHS

Written by Mike Bess from Sega X (which have lots of E3 coverage still
to come!)

Its the morning of the second day of the show. The doors are about to
open, and I thought I'd take a moment to try and make some sense of this
very intense gaming experience. All of the booths are absolutely
fantastic, some bigger than others, but each owning their own aural and
visual character.

Visitors to the Microsoft booth a welcomed by a looming "X" at the
forefront, standing as an imposing figure at the entrance of the South
Wing of the convention center. The Sony booth reaches out from the
center of the south wing, with a large "PlayStation 2" sign hanging
above a massive jumbo-tron cycling through video of upcoming games. Of
all the booths though, the most spectacular and most creative of these
is easily Sega of America's.

From the entrance into the West Wing a massive wall, setup by Sega and
decorated with adds Seganet, shrouds the booth from the view of
visitors. It appears like a grand coliseum dropped into part of this
massive convention center. A Dreamcast logo in the floor welcomes
visitors to enter the booth via a tunnel corridor. The small passage is
filled with sounds and sirens exclaiming "entering decontamination
chamber"; further in a modem whistles as voices roar across hidden
speakers. Then, in a dramatic play of architecture the corridor gives
way opening into grand booth, flanked by dozens of playable kiosks and
crowned in the background by a massive Space Channel 5 display with the
familiar blue "SEGA" logo. To the left a wing of the booth spreads out
into the Seganet area playing copies of Quake 3 and others; while to
the right Sega Arcade shows off Brave Fire Fighters and a Dreamcast
Theater welcomes visitors to enter and view Sonic Adventure 2, Phantasy
Star Online, Shenmue, and Black & White. All together roughly one hundred
titles are playable at the booth (more than Sony), giving everyone a
delicious taste of things to come.

Its becomes an other worldly place at the Sega booth. Every hour a new
show takes place on a massive stage and screen. Presentations for
Ultimate Fighting Championships, Fur Fighters, and Jet Grind Radio were
just a handful of those provided. Professional skaters move to music
with stunts and coordination dances during the Jet Grind Radio show;
while popular fighters from the UFC battle it out on Crave's upcoming
title for the tournament, with the massive screen (even bigger than
Sony's) plays the footage.

Sega has done a fantastic job showing off its titles at E3 2000. Not
only is every game on the floor playable at the Sega booth, but there's
enough sex appeal to set the carpet on fire. Every hour at the Space
Channel 5 display dancers in sexy and revealing apparel come out and
shake their money-makers as dozens of E3-goers watch hypnotized to their
gyrating appendages below. The company has poured a great deal of effort
into its presentation, and with out a doubt, proves its got the momentum
and confidence to keep Dreamcast on top in the States.

>>>> THE GAMES

weekly and printed here.

>>>> Missing My Dreamcast Weekly

Q) 1. Why don't I receive your mag in my e-mail every week? I have to
come to your website all the time because I don't know which weeks
I will get it and which weeks I won't.

   2. Is there ever going to be a game like Jungle Strike or something
for Dreamcast? That helicopter game was phat for Genesis. I know
it was made by EA Sports, but couldn't some other company make
      something?

A) 1. Strange. You are signed up. Is there a limit on how big e-mails
you can receive Our magazines are usually 30k, which is fairly
big. The smaller issues you may receive because they are under
your limit. Check out the settings on your e-mail program.

   2. No, EA wouldn't let anyone else do the game, in particular for the
      Dreamcast.

>>>> Is It The Software, Or The Hardware That's Messing Up?

Q) 1. Every now and then my Dreamcast will freeze up when I try to start
a demo. You know that when you click to play a demo it shows the
controller and all the buttons. With some of the demos I have to
wait about 10 seconds before pushing "a" or it will freeze on a
black screen. Is my Dreamcast screwy or is it just the CD?

   2. My copy of Worms Armageddon only lets me save and load when I use
a standard Dreamcast controller and VMU. If I try and use my
MadCatz controller or my 4X memory card it just says "save (or
load) failed." Why would it do that? - Miles Power

A) 1. The demo CD does almost the same for me, but only when I try to
watch the movies. I think it must be the CD, and you can likely get
a replacement from Sega or the magazine you got it from.

   2. Problems with saving Worms files often come up. I think again it's
the software, just the way it's programmed. It's unclear why they
wouldn't want us to save on a 4X memory card, but perhaps it's
just a bug in the game. You have to use your normal controller and
      VMU.

>>>> Yo, Where's My Main Aliens?

Q) 1. You ever thought about making this a paper mag?

   2. Could you tell me some more about Toejam & Earl 3? - Andrew

A) 1) I hope to in the future one day. Writing DC Weekly is a great
experience and one day should help me land a job at a print Sega
      magazine.

   2) Sorry, they are keeping a tight lid on development as the game is
likely just in the very early stages of programming. As soon as I
hear something on it, it will here in the news.

>>>> Silver, Sonic R, and Sega Emulators

Q) 1. Do you have any information on the game Silver? I heard that it
was supposed to come out this year.

   2. Do you know of any other emulators that might come to the
Dreamcast? I am hoping for a Game Gear EMU.

   3. Sorry for the editorials but, How could fuzzbuzz joe think of a
stupid question!!! The chances of having a "Sonic R" type game
again are so microscopic after it did almost nothing for the Sega
      Saturn! - Sir-Odo (A.K.A. P.I.T.A.)

A) 1. Yes, it's a RPG that's coming out this month in Europe, and late
next month in America. http://www.silver-game.com explains all
about this PC to Dreamcast port.

   2. A Saturn emulator was rumored, but isn't likely to see the light
of the day. The Genesis and PC-Engine emulators are about to be
launched in Japan next month, and may well come to the States.

   3. Sonic R actually impressed even those who thought the Saturn was
all over. The graphics were up to the quality of most Nintendo 64
games, and it received good reviews by most magazines. However it
was just too late in the consoles life to make any real impact.

>>>> Games That Use The Mouse

Q) 1. Hi all, My Question is with regard to the Dreamcast mouse. I've
heard that a new version of dreamkey will use a mouse! Is this
      true?

   2. If dreamkey is to use a mouse, will games utilize it?

   3. I've played games on many formats, and a mouse is the ingredient
that makes a game live! Could you please ask everyone involved in
game development to use a mouse??? - Mark

A) 1. I haven't got an official answer for that, but I don't see why
      they wouldn't include Mouse support.

   2. Quake 3 can use a mixture of the Keyboard & Mouse, but to date
that's the only game confirmed to utilize it. Half Life and other
PC to Dreamcast titles in the future are also likely to have the
option to use the mouse, but as I said, haven't been confirmed.

   3. I'm sure if a game is suited to the mouse the developers will look
at using it. But it depends how well it sells. Speaking of game
control, I did hear a rumor Sonic Adventure works with the Maracas
