Zero Wing is a side-scrolling shooter by Toaplan.
Arcade game[edit]
The original arcade game was released in Japan in July 1989. In North America, it was distributed from April 1990 by Williams Electronics.
Sega Mega Drive[edit]
The Mega Drive port, developed in-house at Toaplan, was released in Japan and Europe, but not in North America.
PC Engine CD-ROM²[edit]
2022–2023 re-release[edit]
In June 2022, Nintendo announced that Zero Wing would become available as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. This was the first time that the game was available on a Nintendo platform.
In August 2022, a Steam version was announced, enhancing the arcade version with quality of life improvements such as difficulty modes and leaderboards. The port was developed by Swedish studio Bitwave Games, and became available on February 14, 2023 on Steam and GOG. A later patch added a reinterpretation of the Mega Drive introduction in English and Japanese.
"All your base"[edit]
Zero Wing's most enduring legacy is the unusually strange English translation found in the European Mega Drive version's introductory cutscene text. (The arcade version lacks this.) Years after the game's release, bolstered by posts on the Something Awful forums, the intro became an early example of a runaway Internet meme, which to this day remains far better known than the game itself.
